Mansfield magnitude-6 earthquake shakes Melbourne, regional Victoria, southern NSW, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Launceston

Reports of damaged buildings are emerging in Victoria, after a magnitude-6 earthquake was felt across Australia's south-east.

Geoscience Australia says the earthquake was detected around Mansfield in Victoria's north-east around 9:15am and was 10-kilometres deep.

The quake was felt 190 kilometres away in Melbourne as well as in regional Victoria, Sydney, regional New South Wales, the ACT, Adelaide and Launceston in Tasmania.

There are reports emerging of significant damage in some parts of Victoria.

Apartment buildings are being evacuated in inner Melbourne, where damage to streets and roads is being posted to social media.

Ross, 60, who lives on the Bellarine Peninsula told ABC Radio Melbourne it was the biggest earthquake he had ever experienced.

"We've just moved into a round earth house on a concrete slab and the whole thing just rock and rolled and the water in the swimming pool went sloshing backwards and forwards," he said.

    "I couldn't believe it."

Margot in Moonee Ponds said at first she thought her daughter was pranking her when her whole house began shaking.

"It was quite intense," she said.

"My chair was shaking… everything in the room was rattling and clinking together."

Expert says aftershocks could continue for months

Seismology Research Centre head Adam Pascale said the epicentre of the quake was north-east of Aberfeldy and the Thomson Dam in the Alpine National Park.

"We are still refining it, but we think it's a mag-5.8 potentially at this point in Gippsland," he told ABC Radio Gippsland.

"It shook here in the northern suburbs of Melbourne for about 15-20 seconds so it's quite a significant earthquake."

Mr Pascale warned there could be aftershocks to come and they could continue for months.

"There is a small likelihood that there could be a larger event but we'll see as we go," he said.

"The main things for people to remember is if they do start to feel some shaking. There's usually a primary and a secondary wave.

"The primary wave will give you a few seconds to get under a table and hold on."

    More to come.

People I work with in the ACT and Queanbeyan felt it too. Amazing.

Scary. On a Teams video call with people all over Melbourne and it was surreal as everyone worked out what was happening.

Where I was working and bloke was on working the roof and I thought he was somehow shaking the house! My initial thought was these old houses have shithouse bracing.

A magnitude-3.8 earthquake in the Melbourne suburb of Sunbury strikes at a depth of 3 kilometres on Sunday night, according to Geoscience Australia, with a leading seismologist saying it could be the city's largest in 100 years.

Earthquake reported at Sunbury near Melbourne, impact felt in city's CBD

A magnitude-3.8 earthquake in Sunbury, west of Melbourne, has been felt across the region but there have been no reports of damage.

Melbourne residents reported buildings shaking on Sunday evening around 11:41pm.

          Key points:
          - The earthquake was reported at 11:41pm AEST on Sunday

          - It lasted only a few seconds but residents in central Melbourne felt the impact

          - Seismologist Adam Pascale believes it's the biggest earthquake in the city of Melbourne in 100 years

Although Sunbury is 40 kilometres north-west of the city, the earthquake's impact was felt in Melbourne's CBD.

The quake, which occurred at a depth of three kilometres, lasted only a few seconds, according to residents.

More than 20,000 people in Sunbury had reported feeling the earthquake to Geoscience Australia by around 1:30am.

The tremor was also felt as far north as Bendigo and as south as Hobart.

Victorian SES chief operations officer Tim Wiebusch said many people reported feeling the tremor, but there were no reports of damage to buildings or injuries.

"The size that we're talking about at a 3.8 it's typically, definitely felt indoors by many and also by those outdoors," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

"You would hear that sudden rush like a train noise that some people experience but it has been widely felt all the way from Geelong to Ballarat, out to Seymour, down on the Mornington Peninsula and as north as Murchison."

Geoscience Australia seismologist Hugh Glanville said the tremor would have been widely felt but would have been unlikely to damage infrastructure.

"While it's stronger shaking that travels a decent distance throughout the region, we don't expect damage from an earthquake of that size," he said.

"You don't tend to get minor damage until around magnitude 4.5 where you'll get things like plaster cracking and things rattling on shelves."

He said more tremors were possible over the next couple of days.

"We could expect aftershocks from an earthquake of this size, it's not guaranteed of course, sometimes you just get a single earthquake and no aftershocks associated," he said.

Adam Pascale, chief scientist at the Seismology Research Centre (SRC), said the earthquake may have been the largest in over 100 years within the Melbourne metropolitan area.

"The last earthquake above a magnitude 4 in the metro area was in 1902," Mr Pascale said in a video posted on Twitter.

Dee Ninis from the SRC said people close to the epicentre reported hearing an explosion.

"This looks to have been a shallow event — the seismic energy produced by such earthquakes can reach the surface to transform into sound waves, making a 'boom'," she tweeted.

Melbourne was rattled by an earthquake in September 2021, which caused some damage, including on the famous Chapel Street shopping strip.

At magnitude-5.9, it was the largest earthquake ever recorded in Victoria, but its epicentre was at Woods Point, about 130 kilometres east of Melbourne.

The 2021 tremor was also felt in parts of New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT.

On average, Australia experiences around 100 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or larger each year, according to Geoscience Australia.

Earthquakes above magnitude-5, such as the destructive 5.4 magnitude earthquake in Newcastle in 1989, occur approximately every one to two years.

Felt it strongly - not far from the epicentre. (15k)

Thought either a car had crashed into the house, or someone who attempting to break in.

Oh so that's what I felt last night (Southbank). Thought it was a weird strong wind. Probably helps being pretty low in the building (level 2)

It was weird, my dog started malfunctioning about half an hour before the quake, started point his snout in the air and licking his lips and then flapping his ears repeatedly. Then about thirty seconds before it hit started barking and then throughout.

I was in the shower. It wasn't as full on as the one in 2021 as that seemed to go forever.
