An Australian version of the Office?

I gather we have a number of Office fans on the forum and I was shocked to hear that there could be an Australian version of it. I'm not sure we can do it justice.

Is Magda Szubanski the next David Brent? Australian version of beloved sitcom The Office going into production - and the bumbling boss will be a woman this time.

The beloved UK sitcom The Office is getting a local Australian version.

The show, which also spawned a highly successful American remake, will be coming to Amazon Prime Video.

Casting is underway for the series, with big names approached, The Herald Sun reported on Tuesday.

Wentworth's Katrina Milosevic, 45, and Muriel's Wedding actress Rachel Griffiths, 53, have also reportedly been approached.

While in the British version the bumbling boss, David Brent, is played by series creator Ricky Gervais, 60, in the Aussie series, the role will go to a woman.

The comedian and actor played David Brent in the BBC mockumentary for two seasons and later also reprised the role in stand-alone specials.

The Office aired from 2001 to 2002, and won numerous Baftas and Golden Globes.

In the American remake, also called The Office, Steve Carell, 59, played woeful boss Michael Scott for seven seasons.

Running from 2005 to 2013, the U.S. version won five Emmys and had 42 nominations, including six for Steve Carell.

The Down Under iteration was originally touted as having Australian comedian Jim Jefferies, 45, attached, but it's understood he is no longer involved.

Likewise, Aussie comedic actress Isla Fisher, 46, was reportedly approached, but has not signed on to the project.

I'm sure that this was being talked about a year or so ago.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Now if they gave the David Brent role to someone like Hannah Gadsby that'd be awesome. Someone genuinely dry, witty, on the spectrum and able to hold a gaze without being a caricature...........

To make it good you actually need to make it good and not rely on "tried and true" talents like those who have been mentioned in the article.

No matter what happens it can't be as bad as the film Australia or perhaps it possibly could be. We're capable of it.

I'd love to be a creative director on the show as I've work some of the best and worst bosses over the years.
I had one guy in the 80's who used to call all the ladies, love, sweet heart and wait for it.... even toots.
"Be a dear and get me a coffee" and when she came back a polite "Thanks toots"
A show could have a lot of fun with someone loosely based on him.
He once told me that if you have to talk to someone about their work performance not being up to scratch do it at 4pm on a Friday.
The theory was to let then worry about it over the weekend on their time and by Monday they'd either resign or admit they could do better.

I actually worked with someone who was so uncannily like David Brent at the time the original came out that I couldn't bring myself to watch the bloody thing.

One of my favourite moments was arguing over whether I was arguing with Harvard when he pulled a "Harvard" stat about achievement being a certain percentage potential versus effort, during one of our 8am Monday morning team meetings after a weekend depleting my serotonin reserves.

He's actually lucky he didn't get me on a Tuesday morning.

I can't imagine it will be good. Maybe going a different direction with the manager as a women will mean it has a different dynamic and has to be original. More likely is they just stick a woman in the role without really getting the joke of a David Brent type manager and it just doesn't work (because TBH I think it takes away from the buffoonery of the manager character if they're a woman. Brent/Michael is the epitome of a mediocre white dude who's in charge for 'some reason' but no good at it)

Well why did you argue with Harvard?

I know it's hard to imagine but in the early 00's I was somewhat of a contrarian.

But in this instance it wasn't contrarianism driving my objections to the weekly's narrative. It was the paraphrasing without context of the outcomes of rigorous academic study. That level of cheapness has always ground my gears, and still does.

You could go back further with Frontline as well which has a lot of similarities.

How they portray the ministers is gold.

The episode where the minister was like a child waiting for the "swoosh" sound on his ipad to say the email was sent.
