Today is Australia Day. It's a day for contemplation of who and where we are as a people, a nation. You don't have to yahoo it up, demand fireworks or listen to the rants of politicians, activists and those who choose to be eternally offended. If you want to go back in time and look at the beginnings, look first at your own families, the overwhelming majority of us are here because our ancestors wanted better lives for themselves and their children and their children's children, Today, I toast and thank Daniel, Catherine, Joseph, Brigid, Michael, Bridget, Timothy and Catherine for jumping on tiny ships the length of cricket pitches on the other side of the world, 170 plus years ago, sailing for 3 months so that I and mine, have the lives we have. I recall a news item, some years ago, of a large, immigrant, muslim, extended family in the north western suburbs of Melbourne having a big family lunch celebrating their family's life in Australia on 26 January. That's the way to celebrate Australia Day.
