    Australia Day 2024

Today is Australia Day. It's a day for contemplation of who and where we are as a people, a nation. You don't have to yahoo it up, demand fireworks or listen to the rants of politicians, activists and those who choose to be eternally offended. If you want to go back in time and look at the beginnings, look first at your own families, the overwhelming majority of us are here because our ancestors wanted better lives for themselves and their children and their children's children, Today, I toast and thank Daniel, Catherine, Joseph, Brigid, Michael, Bridget, Timothy and Catherine for jumping on tiny ships the length of cricket pitches on the other side of the world, 170 plus years ago, sailing for 3 months so that I and mine, have the lives we have. I recall a news item, some years ago, of a large, immigrant, muslim, extended family in the north western suburbs of Melbourne having a big family lunch celebrating their family's life in Australia on 26 January. That's the way to celebrate Australia Day.

    Man......

Appreciate the sentiment and I'm happy for you, but, perhaps some of us who don't listen to ranting politicians, activists, or aren't eternally offended might not see it that way.

    Have a great day.
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

When I lived up in Bendigo the Australia day holiday was a terrific time spent with my mates. Off to Lake Eppalock, Fish BBQ, home slaw and potato salad and plenty of games of cricket and a few swims as well. Fond memories. Years later and some friends and I would trek to Adelaide for a weekend of ODI cricket games.
I get that the world is changing and it might not mean to many people what it meant to me but it was always a special day.

Thankyou, J, G & L, that's the way. In a troubled world, we are blessed to be where and when we are. We have our own code of footy, but it doesn't stop there, we have the stump-jump-plough to the internet, it'd exhaust the bandwith if I had to acknowledge all our accomplishments. The Mitchells get together, tomorrow, to celebrate a grandchild's birthday. I tried the old thanks to Daniel, Catherine...routine last year, shouted down ! How good was that ? Isn't this worth a day off ?

I hope they change the date personally. I think the dawn services give the first nation people a bit of help to get through a pretty tough day but surely its time.

"Dawn Services" is the hint. Perhaps abandon Aus Day and rely upon ANZAC day ? Similar emotions, fine by me.

Hopefully we end up a republic and maybe that day could be our national day perhaps.

I voted in favour of the Republic in the Refrendum in 1999. My rusted on ALP wife voted no ! What a great country.

The World changing isn't enough. For as long as I've been alive and since 1931, in Victoria, 26 Jan has been Australia Day and it's been about Aus since federation. Back to my quiet contemplation.

Australia day actually represents the day The Brits invaded this continent and we are the only country in the world celebrating an invasion.

The only thing I enjoy is a day off.

As far as traditions go it is slightly more consistent than Carlton and Richmond to kick off the season.......
