As the 00's are coming to a close, the world's music media have started compiling their 'best of' album and artist lists for the decade. Some interesting no.1 albums have been selected so far. NME had 'Is This It?' by The Strokes, Pitchfork selected 'Kid A' by Radiohead, and The Guardian voted for 'Original Pirate Material' by The Streets, a very interesting selection.
If I had to choose one album, my vote would go to 'Funeral' by Arcade Fire, with 'Kill The Moonlight' by Spoon and 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' by Wilco rounding out the placings - I was a late-comer to YHF but it is an absolutely amazing record. But 'Funeral' tops everything released this decade for me - such a powerful collection of songs.
Most music media publications went the safe option for artist of the decade, with Radiohead almost being the default choice. They have certainly deconstructed and redefined themselves, and produced some high quality and uncompromising output this decade. But for sheer quality and consistency of output, my artist of the decade would have to be Spoon - their 4 albums and 1 EP released over the course of the decade have been flawless, not even coming close to a single song that could be classed as filler. Their albums are all 'growers' in the best sense of the word. They have continually refined and experimented with their sound but not to the extent that they lose their identity. I've heard a couple of traces from the new album, 'Transference', which is released next month, and it continues the high standard they have set for themselves.
Would be good to hear fellow woofer's thoughts on album and artist of the decade.
