Footscray City Rowing Club (Riverview Function Centre)

I'm attempting to plan a "function" (read: wedding, using the W-word magically doubles the price of anything! ), and have been looking at the Footscray City Rowing Club as a potential venue.

I was wondering (especially given it's in the right area), have any WOOF-ers actually been to a function there and was it any good?

I'm yet to go and see it all set up in person, but some of the photos I've seen look cool, and their prices seems very reasonable (especially compared to other some places, ugh!).
Wake me up when we get to heaven, let me sleep if we're going to hell

Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath

And we all found heaven - 2016 Premiers!

I have been down there several times for Kayak racing and have seen the club set up etc but I can't help with how they run their functions and what the food etc is like.

However, The facilities look pretty good, plenty of parking and a nice spot.

I've got a vague picture in my mind of a sign saying Footscray City Rowing Club. Where is it? Is it along the banks of the river near Maribyrnong Rd? On the way to Essington.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

That's the one, behind Flemington Racecourse, and at the bottom of the hill that Footscray City College (ol' Footscray Tech) sits.

Thanks bornadog, we had a drive around last weekend and it did look promising from the outside, and the view of the city down river is particularly nice.

My biggest concern is that someone I speak to (if we do end up booking it) will come back with, "OH MY GOD, not there! It's <insert horrendous item here>"

Is that the place with the weird potholes all over the unsealed parking area? It's just outside Edgewater isn't it -- drove into it in a haze one day (blame my GPS) and spent a good fifteen minutes trying to get out without busting the car's suspension.

          ps. Oh, and congratulations!

Yup, when I went there for a stickybeak, I decided that it was worse than driving the Gibb River Road in the Kimberleys, and that my poor little Corolla isn't really up to such tasks!

Thanks for the congratulations. We are a little on the slow side with planning, given we've been engaged for two years now and haven't done a cracker...

Will be interested to hear how you like the place? I am also looking for a "function" place and want something local. Appreciate the slow with the planning - we have been engaged for about 6 years now, together for 15 - I figure there is no point in rushing these things!

Why not try the Footscray Community Arts Centre...it's also on the river and a cool spot for Photos?

Have you looked at Ascot House Receptions? We had a gander around and probably would have chosen it if we lived out that way.

We went with Buttleigh Wootton in Kew and loved everything about it -- price (very reasonable in winter), fantastic people, gorgeous building (which makes for great photos), good location, ambience (simple but classy and old-school, but without the overdone private school/debutant preppiness), great food, no-fuss -- can't recommend it more highly, but it's out East. Have told lots of people who have decided to go with them after our recommendation (and some after attending our wedding).

ps. there are definitely heaps of terrible and overpriced places, and we were very wary of those. Some horrendous venues charging through the nose (and plenty of greasy operators exploiting young ignorant couples).. I don't know how they get away with it, but I guess there's no legislating for taste. My bullshit/scumbag radar was going into overdrive when we were checking venues out.

Thanks for the tip - I am not looking for a traditional wedding place really, as I don't want a traditional wedding. Ours will be a morning wedding and we will have a brunch to celebrate. I was even thinking of The Pound at the Whitten Oval. They have very reasonable function packages - not over the top at all.

That sounds like a lovely plan MG, and I'll let you know how the rowing club goes, I think we're going to drop in there this Saturday.

I looked and looked to see if the Whitten Oval held functions in some capacity, but couldn't find anything! I think it's because I didn't look up the "Pound". I would love to have our wedding there, but I would be vetoed by my (West Coast - what am I doing??) partner.

Having said that, I would recommend it as a function venue. My grandfather's wake was held at the WO (admittedly before the improvements), and they looked after us really well.

Interested to see what you think - we took a drive to the rowing club today and I admit it doesn't look like much from the outside! The Pound has good food at reasonable prices, and guess what, I am marrying a Collingwood supporter (). He is okay with it - can't really get married at the Westpac Centre now, can we?
