STRUGGLING Melbourne talk radio station MTR is "most unlikely" to continue in its current form after posting a $6.2 million loss in the last financial year.

The station's headliners include Steve Price, Steve Vizard and Herald Sun columnist Andrew Bolt, but in the latest ratings it recorded a dismal 2 per cent audience share.

I'm genuinely surprised. I spent a good many years not watching TV, but since moving in with my partner I've reluctantly watched a lot more and come to the conclusion that douchebags still rate well. Masterchef, Australia's Got Talent, Today Tonight, Sunrise and a plethora of cop/lawyer/hospital shows had me convinced. Watched Home and Away with my dad the other day and was amazed at how much all the actors/actresses look alike. (And that they haven't killed off Alf yet — Struth!)

Radio, for mine, is very similar in that most networks stick to a tried and true formula instead of going for something innovative. How MTR can rate any worse than 3AW or Triple M, based on the view taken above that right-wing Nazi douchebags must be putting people off, doesn't add up for me. I mean, it's talkback radio. How hard can it be? Get some “controversial” shock jock, have him offend everybody he can and then wait for people to call in and provide the entertainment. Pepper it with some Frank Walker from National Tiles ads and gee, I wonder why nobody's listening?

I am at a loss to understand how building a radio station around his pleasant personality didnt work. I cant think why it didnt wortk for him up in Sydney either.


As long as they dont drag SEN down with them the radio dial can only be a better place without MTR bringing the the likes of Bolt to us.

Targetting the small market that consists of ignorant, indignant table-thumpers never sounded like a brilliant business strategy and the ratings reflect this.
