The one thing we can all do now and in the future is call out anyone that is racist. At the footy the best way is to call security.

I also wonder what Brett had to put up with in his footy career (and personal life as well). I hope anyone that abused him feel ashamed now.

I'm convinced most of the people booing weren't being racist just following the lead of others. When kids around 12 years of age are booing and abusing a player at full voice it's because they're copying many others. In my opinion he was being bullied as much as anything else, yes there was a racist element but the coordinated booing and abuse is what gave it momentum.

Yes. There was pack mentality. However the bullying began because he was vocal in regards to standing up for his people. If he didn't make a stand he would not have been bullied. You can't escape the racial sentiment of the abuse no matter which we you decide to slice it.

He certainly made mistakes that contributed to the problem but when it followed him to every game clearly enough was enough

I remember this going around and around this site at the time.

In the end it was certainly helpful in that it showed us just how batshit people are. I mean, he threw an invisible spear that made people freak out for weeks. That's right, an invisible spear made people crazy for weeks.

If that's not a helpful insight into the situation I'm not sure what is.

No one lost their mind their mind and abused Mark Williams when he did the shot gun celebration or last year when the Xavier Duursma did his bow and arrow celebration. Just convenient excuses for shameful attacks on Adam Goodes.

The Haku is done to the opposition not the crowd. I get the intent but it did ramp things up

What if the Carlton supporter stood up and abused Goodes back? I'm guessing he would have been eviscerated.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

                            Depends on the abuse.

You know, if he/she did a dance and threw an invisible spear back at Goodes I'm pretty sure it would have been OK. If he/she said something racist, homophobic, or whatever the public broadly finds unsatisfactory then they'd have probably gotten a whack.

I mean seriously, a footballer does a dance and chucks an invisible spear in your direction do you loose your mind and start saying racist and homophobic thngs at them, or do you just take it on board and tell them to get on with the game, get stuffed, or bugger off?

Do you get over it quickly, or do you let it ruin your day? Too many people chose the latter.

If he had have done his dance aimed at me I would personally have loved it!! I loved it when he done and I am still proud of him for doing it!!!! That's just my view and not foe everyone but what he copped for it was a disgrace in my eyes.

Still stuck in 2015. I hope the next season is good for us.

I’m with Jeemak. Time to call out the real victims. Spectators from 2015 with imaginary injuries from invisible spears. It’s virtually impossible to quantify this harm. So it’s actually unlimited harm.

I’m a bit raw on this. While a copper at the footy 15 years ago I was first on the scene to an imaginary mass murder where Hawthorn player Mark Williams kept unloading invisible shotguns into the crowd. It was a massive non bloodbath of non gun violence. I still can’t forgive him.

Racism is real from footy to institutions, and the best answer we have is keep attacking the problem. Just reading posts of MJP and others about what young indigenous kids face in footy is often remarkable that it’s still going on. I think the best thing for our club is to bring in indigenous players to list from around the land and be better educated and engaged in being real agents of change. I’m not sure in 5 years this topic has drastically changed.
