    20 years ago today.......

    Kurt Cobain died.

Was such a sad day for me (17 year old misfit) back then. Amazing how much influence they have had in such a small career(time wise). Greatest band ever for me, no one comes close.

Been loving the remastered 20th anniversary releases that have been coming out over the last few years, just brings back so many memories. They truly were the voice of a generation.

So many great artists have died so young. 20 years gone so quickly.

Kurt's voice is just amazing and Dave's drumming was perfect after he joined. I love most everything, the MTV set is iconic too.

I felt sorry for Kurt that his growing up was anti jocks and cool kids, he music and that while the music wasn't for them the jumped on in huge numbers. And there's Courtney Love...

Yeah the early 90s were the peak of alt rock. When he died pretty much that grunge scene faded away. I would say chef that Iron Maiden is right up there as one of the greatest ever bands as well. Back on Kurt he was one of the best songwriters.

Seriously? I can easily think of a dozen greater bands than Nirvana.

Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath only just to name a few. But yeah while Nirvana was very good the best in that scene would probably be Alice in Chains for mine.

For me no one comes close and I know that I'm not alone. But that's music, there's something out there for everyone.

love to see your list of a dozen better bands though.

As a 20 year old musician at the time who was heavily influenced by Nirvana, I was absolutely gutted when I heard the news.

For me there are several bands and musicians ahead of them, but they are one of the greats to be sure, and stand like beacons against the crap that stood for mainstream music at the time. The top 40 has always been dominated by shit, but the early 90's and right now were and are especially putrid. The time is right for another rock band to come along and flush today's crap down the toilet like Nirvana did back then.

With due respect, I think Sound Garden, Pearl Jam are more in line with the grunge scene of the times as opposed To BS or LZ. Whilst they had a smashing noise, I don't classify Nirvana anywhere near rock or some derivatives. They smashed the shite out of everything and musicly did some pretty special things and helped coin the 'Seattle Sound'. They opened the audience for a new wave of music to come through who wouldn't have had mainstream success, ie Smashing Pumpkins. The music spoke to me then like nothing else and still does to this date. I think if you lived it and loved it, nothing comes close. If you didn't, its loud noises and weird lyrics. But to each their own.

That's for sure, the beauty of the art of music. If the discussion is on bands, not simply artists, then I'll say: The Beatles, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Cream, Pink Floyd, TOTO, The Beach Boys, The Band (yes, that was their name!), The Everly Brothers ("two" counts as a band , AC/DC, Cold Chisel.

Yeah agree Andrew that Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were apart of the grunge scene and they are both great bands. Zeppelin and Sabbath being the founders of Heavier rock certainly influenced the grunge bands.

I guess that's music, I see more punk influcing things when you look at the early bands of those in and around Nirvana, like Scream and Germs.
