I guess that's music, I see more punk influcing things when you look at the early bands of those in and around Nirvana, like Scream and Germs.
Sorry BT Yeah agree that punk as well as heavy metal had a big influence on grunge.

Just like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones as well as The Sex pistols, they were a massive influence on other bands.

Yeah for sure RM. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones huge influence for rock bands and the Sex Pistols on the punk bands. There are artists who are just iconic to a genre. Bob Marley with Reggae, Michael Jackson with Pop, Black Sabbath on Hard rock and metal, Run DMC with hip hop just to name a few.

I was 22yo and a massive indie/grunge/alternative fan, so it is no surprise that Nirvana were a massive influence on me. It's hard to understand just how ground-breaking they were at the time - they can smashing in and gate-crashed the world's radio stations and music charts and forever changed the face of popular music. Overnight all those awful cock rock bands like Poison and Warrant were rendered irrelevant, and a new wave of counter culture was ushered in. The years 1991-1996 were amazing years in music - wave after wave of brilliance, individuality and creativity, and all of it really kick-started by Nirvana (or at least brought into the mainstream by them).

love to see your list of a dozen better bands though.
Each to their own I say. I reckon Tool would have to be one of the best bands ever. They are so unique and no one sounds like them.

One word for you who want to sort out who the greatest Seattle band is/was.

                Mudhoney.

Not forgetting that Cosmic Psychos were playing that type of music around Melbourne for five years before anyone ever heard of any if those bands and that Melbourne had a grunge scene long before Seattle.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.
