    Re: Sheffield Shield 2015/16

Queensland have two incredibly exciting you batting prospects in Matt Renshaw and Sam Heazlett but it's uncanny how much they look like two recent Australian batting greats.

    Here are their highlights:
Cricket highlights, replays, exclusive content, features and videos from Test matches, ODIs, T20s, ICC tournaments and live streaming.

I want to see if anyone is thinking the same two names I'm thinking

      Wow. Hayden and Katich clones.

Renshaw could be Hayden's identical twin.

Yep thought exactly the same. Heazlett looks a bit more adventurous than Kato but has the shuffle down pat. I've never seen two batsman look as similar as Renshaw and Hayden though

              It's pleasing to see a few batsmen putting up decent Shield numbers this season, including a few younger players. Last year, barely anyone could manage a 50 average, but this year those who have played 5 or more matches and average over 50 include;

              - George Bailey (Tas, 33) 655 @ 54.6
              - Cameron Bancroft (WA, 23) 693 @ 57.8
              - Travis Dean (Vic, 24) 626 @ 52.1
              - Ben Dunk (Tas, 28) 825 @ 58.9
              - Callum Ferguson (SA, 31) 478 @ 53.1
              - Chris Hartley (Qld, 33) 431 @ 51.6
              - Sam Heazlett (Qld, 20) 572 @ 53.1
              - Jake Lehmann (SA, 23) 527 @ 58.6
              - Glenn Maxwell (Vic, 27) 392 @ 56
              - Kurtis Patterson (NSW, 22) 531 @ 53.1
              - Matt Renshaw (Qld, 19) 632 @52.7

You're right as of a few years ago but things changed pretty markedly after the 2012 season when CA issued a directive that Shield pitches be flatter and there was less emphasis on manufacturing four day, result wickets. For examples the top run-scorers in 2014/15 were:

                -Adam Voges 1358 @ 104
                -Michael Klinger 1046 @ 58
                -Cam Bancroft 896 @ 47
                -Callum Ferguson 836 @ 52
                -Ed Cowan 815 @ 48
                -Joe Burns 793 @ 53
                -Marcus Stoinis 785 @ 49
                -Pete Nevill 764 @ 76
                -Shaun Marsh 706 @ 64

Handscomb, Wade and Dan Christian also averaged scored over 500 runs at over 50 that year.

Go back to the year before and the numbers are almost as healthy with four players (North, Cooper, Carters and Forrest) topping 800 runs and 16 players in total scoring more than 500 runs and average at least 45.

You're right as of 2012/13, Ricky Ponting was the only player to pass 800 runs (911 @ 75) in his farewell season for Tasmania and we had a guy like Alex Doolan rewarded with the number 3 test spot for his 715 runs @ 42.

The change in directive from CA is probably most evident though in the wicket-takers list.

In 2012/13 the top 5 wicket-takers were all medium pacers: Sayers, Butterworth, Faulkner, Mennie and Hopes. The most successful spinner was Steve O'Keefe, his 24 wickets put him at number 16 on the list.

In 2013/14, Steve O'Keefe was the most successful bowler in the competition with 41 wickets. He was also joined in the top 10 wicket-takers by Johan Botha with 36 wickets.

In 2014/15, Fawad Ahmed was the leading bowler with 48 wickets. He was joined in the top 10 by Ashton Agar who was the fourth leading wicket-taker with 31 wickets and Steve O'Keefe who was seventh leading wicket-taker with 28 wickets.

What I find encouraging about this year's list compared to recent times is the amount of younger guys, particularly Lehmann, Bancroft, Heazlett, Renshaw, Patterson and Dean.

Pattinson out for rest of Shield season. Can't take a trick with injuries.

He needs nearly a full season of the Vic's managing his bowling. It's just too risky to keep bringing him back into the test line-up

Agreed. From what I read in an ideal world he wouldn't have gone to NZ, but due to injuries they called him up. He missed the second test as he wasn't deemed "match fit" but was for the third test and played. Clearly he was not.

Vics play NSW in the last game with the loser to probably miss out.. As usual the Vics batsman fail to fire a shot when required.
