Yeah. It was pretty obvious even to an untrained eye like mine that the swimmers 1%ers were lousy. Most of them were considerably later into the water than their opponents. I could see it took Campbell a lot longer to turn than her opponent. You'd think they'd be on top of stuff like that. How does a professional sporting team be so bad at fundamentals of the sport.

Like kicking for goal for a football team as a f'rinstance...
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Yes she is. Max was a handy player.

        London 2012 in the pool - 1 gold 6 silver 3 bronze, 10 medals
        Rio 2016 in the pool - 3 gold 4 silver 3 bronze, 10 medals

If London was considered a complete disaster, Rio is almost as bad considering we had far more world top 3 swimmers in the current team.

A bit better but still down on expectations. We needed a few more medals than we got.
A lot of money is spent on improving our swimming chances at each games and we should be getting a bit more back in return. The so called great rivalry we have with the USA really isn't there.

Being kind I reckon. We had 8 WR holders competing in Rio and 15 top 3 swimmers in individual events - if these swimmers competed to current expectation (not even-overachieved) we get 8-12 gold (depending on relays) and upwards of 20 medals (again depending on relays). It was a dreadful campaign made to look slightly better by a couple of exceptional performances by greenhorns (Chalmers in the 100m and Horton in the 400m). The women's campaign was an unmitigated disaster, taking away the 4 x 100m which we were $1.20 favourites for. Cate Campbell's fantastic swim in the 4 x 100m medley relay to secure silver from miles back was a telling reminder of how badly she fluffed her 2 individual events.

Amazing day of running. That South African who won the 400 in WR time from lane 8 was phenomenal.

Bruce called Usain a genius, not sure it takes much in the brain department to run 100 Metres in a straight line .. A genius ?
Bruce even irritates me calling the olympics .

Bruce is a brilliant caller of athletics and does an amazing job.

One day he won't be calling - and you'll realise how great he has been - capturing the biggest moments on the track.

Is there a more over hyped and over indulged lot than the Australian Swimming Team, AKA, the Dolphins?
                          TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I don't mind him at the track. For some reason it seems he leaves the hyper-sexualisation of his subjects to the football and actually says meaningful things.

Bruce is a brilliant athletics commentator, which is why it is so galling that he now performs such a caricature when commentating the footy. Watch the Dogs v Collingwood match in 1990 when Kolyniuk kicked the winning goal - Bruce's commentary was perfect.

He was a fantastic footy commentator (many, many years ago to be truthful) and still is a brilliant athletics commentator. Wasn't too shabby doing the Melbourne Cup either - watch Empire Rose winning in 1988.

If you want to see what the future of commentating will be on Ch 7, just watch the abomination that is Basil Zempilas at the swimming last week.

You're spot on with all of the above. I think its only been since 7 won the footy back (after Ch9 and Ch10 had their go) that Bruce's footy commentary has moved to what it is now with the questions ("You just get the feeling....don't you" etc). Agree with you on the Kolyniuk call. One of my other favourites was 1997 Dogs v WCE in Perth, if you recall, was the "Grant LAUNCHES HIMSELF" moment - that was just perfect anticipation and calling.

If you ever get the chance to see Bruce being interviewed about racing, or athletics - or calling - it is absolutely fascinating. His depth of knowledge and his understanding of how moments fitted into history and circumstances at the time - is absolutely second to none.

His call of the 10,000m on Sunday morning was fantastic. His call of Freeman's 400m in Sydney, is part of history.
