    Graeme Smith - You Tool!!

Graeme Smith has always rated fairly high on the knob-o-meter but I loved the way he got out last night.

He got beaten by a beauty from a left-arm finger spinner, it dragged him forward, spun and Smith was a yard out of his ground. He didn't even look back, just tucked his bat under his arm and walked.

The problem was the keeper didn't take it and the ball rebounded in front of the wicket and was rolling away from the stumps back up the pitch behind Smith. The keeper was basically sneaking up behind Smith to get the ball to complete the stumping.

Did he sneak silently enough to effect the stumping or did he give away the plot?

He just tucked the bat under his arm and marched off and never looked back assuming that he had been bowled or stumped when in fact the ball was in front of his stumps.
By the time the keeper had removed the bail Smith had made mid pitch.
As SS said, it was effectively a walk.

They're a disgrace. It's against the spirit of cricket.

I'd nick one to 2nd slip and they'd have to drag me off the ground.

My 4 yo has got it right. "No. I'm not out, it's still my turn to bat". I was still saying that at 35.

Agree completely, only time i walk is if i am bowled or obviously caught, never walk otherwise, because sometimes your given out when your not, it evens out in the end that way.

Sometimes playing cricket in the country areas we would have to have our own players as the 2nd umpire at square leg. When that occurred, one of the clubs I played for had a hard and fast rule that the batsman should make it easy on the umpire for run outs and stumpings and walk if they were sure they were out.

During one of the seasons one of the better batsman in the side mistakenly laughed off that at the end of the game drinks he was in fact stumped in a close decision with one of his team mates umpiring at square leg. He was later penalised from playing the following week which was the first week of a final.

I walked about 80% of the time and think I bluffed my way out of about two decisions.
I don't think I would have walked if I played at a higher level though.

Had the ball actually passed the wicket in the first place? I always thought that if the keeper took the ball in front of the stumps then the square leg umpire would call it a no-ball.

What would be the ruling if it hadnt passed the return crease and the 'keeper walked forward and picked the ball up from the pitch and affected the stumping?

And yes. Grame Smith is a knob.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

EJ Smith will be able to give a definate ruling but I'm pretty sure that the keeper can't take the ball in front of the stumps unless it has hiot the batsman or his bat.

In Smith's instance, the ball beat the bat, missed off stump by a millimetre, hit the keepers pads and rebounded back up the wicket.

Sockeye is correct but the fact that the ball had passed the stumps and rebounded off the Keeper allows him to then take it in front of the stumps

I think Two Dogs means the Bowling crease. The return crease runs from the Popping cease at a 90 degree angle and past the bowling crease and no, the Keeper can't take the ball in front of the stumps unless it makes contact with the striker or his person or he attempts a run. If he does so it is a no-ball.

So in answer to Two Dogs question, the ball did not make contact with the strker and he was not attempting a run so.............No ball

And I too agree - Smith is a knob.
