Just remember Warner ran him out in Brisbane. While on pure runs he heasn't quite measured up the fact he can bat through a session bodes well for him. They should stick with him for a while

Smith and Shaun Marsh are batting well but England dried up the runs significantly in the 2nd session after conceding 100 without loss in the 1st. 3 for 242 and the new ball has been taken

Why did they delay taking the new ball I wonder? What possible advantage did Root see in continuing on with the old ball?

The moment they took it the Australian batsmen were jumping about. I think this English team is the perfect shitstorm (to quote mr Lahey) of shit cricketers and shit, unimaginative and uninspiring leadership.

        It's clueless.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

England did well in that 2nd session restricting us to 43 runs only. Field placings changed and the batsmen found it difficult to get through.

Root clearly has no confidence in Ali and the selectors have none in Crane. No idea why they wouldn't change things up and give him a go.

Curran looked good but you can throw him on the overcrowded pile of good English medium pacers.

Clearly the delay in taking the new ball was due to the workload imposed on Anderson and Broad. Just delayed until there was only time for 2 overs from each end as the new ball bowlers had not enough in the tank for anything more.

Now they basically have another go this morning with the bowlers a little fresher.

The pitch is a new ball pitch, I don't think waiting was the right thing to do. They should have taken it as soon as it was available. They aren't going to win this test match with tactics.

But they aren't going to win this test match anyway.

Their lack of depth with the ball is a serious problem for them.

Very true. It's a very samish bowling attack too. Not much variety.

Since lunch on day one England has pretty much out played us. Tactically England have been very good and it makes a big difference when the experienced players like Cook, Anderson and Broad make good contributions.

This is what we have really wanted to see in the series and now it's up to Smith and the bowlers to wrestle back some ground tomorrow.
Anderson made some comments about our bowling depth and now with Starc out we will probably have that answered by the end of day 3.

Didn't help today with Cummins having a stomach issue. The dropped catch from Smith was very costly.

We really blew it today 7/66 (odd) didn't help

Don't think the crowd has gotten value for money. Mediocre two days batting, bar Warner. Usman khawaja was very disappointing.

How about Cook, one of the all time greats.

I was wondering why his average was so much lower than the others on the list.

Then it hit me. He's the only opener on the list, as such would have been dismissed a lot more than the others.

                              He's in fine company.

Precisely. The others all batted at 3 or 4 for most of their careers but mostly started off at no. 6. Cook would have faced less tired attacks as well. Most of his runs were made when the fielding team were up and on their toes. The others would have had more opportunity to whack bowlers with hunched shoulders and sore legs around the park in the prime time of the innings for batsmen.
