Who Captains Australia?

Tim Paine has the job at the moment but who is likely to be the captain come next summer?
Do they stick with Paine or does someone else come into consideration?

We've always been reluctant to appoint wicketkeepers captain but I think Paine might be a chance of keeping the job. Never underestimate the power of incumbency for one thing. Paine's job to lose.

I predicted on this board some 7 years ago that Paine will be captain one day. Its either Paine or Marsh, can't think of anyone else.

It's a stunning rise to the national captaincy. He wasn't even keeping for Tassie at first class level four months ago. He's virtually gone from keeping at district cricket level to being the captain of the Australian test team in less than six months.

If anything this whole thing has been a damning indictment on the lack of leadership in Australian cricket.

That the captain should be a player considered fortunate to be playing in the first place, on paper its terrible management and development.

It's a reflection on the way states focus on shield cricket but I get that to some degree.
To keep the shield competition strong we hang onto many players that have no real chance to play international cricket.

State Captains consist of Handscomb, Khawaja, Bailey, Marsh, Smith/Henriques and Head

None of the players already in the test side are walk up starts. Khawaja doesn't strike me as a strong enough leader and he doesn't have great form playing overseas especially on the sub continent. Marsh is often injured but is in form at the moment. Handscomb was a bit lucky to make the squad. Then we have Bailey and Henqriques that shouldn't play again and Head who look promising but hasn't been in the mix for the longer version of the game.

Matthew Wade also captains Tas but now has Paine ahead of him.

Perhaps it has to go to Marsh.

Wade was (I believe) captain of Victoria in the previous season, but I don't believe he has ever captained Tasmania.

We do have a really unusual circumstance and Paine was close to retirement as he had been discarded by Tasmania under the coaching of Dan Marsh.

I would have thought an older player like White to go over , it's only one test he has a great head on his shoulders and a lot of respect.
Why did they take maxwell ? Still really wierd decisions being made.

Paine for me. I think we really need the best head right now. Picking only from long term locks limits us too much. If Paine struggles, we assess it as needed.

Has to be Paine for me. No player within that top 7 has cemented a spot - you might as well go with the guy that seems to have the best head on his shoulders.

Cummins is my smokey. Walk up start to the side, impressive character that speaks well, intelligent bowler. He ticks a lot of boxes even if it is too much too soon.

Agree with Paine, but how long does he have in him? he is 33/34?, suffers with buggered . We might get him through to after the away Ashes in 2019, but who after that? That gives Paine this away season, a home summer, and an away Ashes campaign. Can he go any longer than that considering age/health/keeper-skipper?
If that plays out, it really only gives other one home summer and perhaps an away in county season in UK to press their claims. Or Smith walks back into job after Ashes 2019/Paine retirement? Certainly not advocating that, but struggling to think of another 'apprentice' coming through.
I rate George Bailey very highly but perhaps his ship has sailed due to age.
