A few I'll add to the mix GVG:

-Jake Doran: Very talented and started to put it together last year averaging 44 and hitting his first ton. He needs to go on with starts and converting his half centuries but Tassie have worked out that he's a batsman first and not a keeper. He's a diminutive left-hander with a Mike Hussey cover drive.

-Kurtis Patterson: Pretty gritty and determined middle order batsman. Burst onto the scene a while ago (is still only 25) but has taken a while to build his average - which now sits a tick under 40. I think he'd be a good player and would do well in England. Gets runs when times are tough – think Phil Jaques.

-Jack Edwards: Burst onto the scene after a successful underage career – I really like him. Tall and plays all around the wicket - a bit like Michael Clarke. He's only just made his first class debut but remember the name.

-Jake Weatherald: We're all talking about Short (first class average of 23) but no one's talking about Weatherald who's 5 years younger and has a first class average that's 10 runs better. He hits the ball as hard as anyone and made the fourth most runs in the Shield last year.

-Jake Lehmann: Think he was worked out a bit last year but still averages close to 40 in that middle order and is South Australia's newly-minted captain. He's a dasher but I have some questions about how well he plays spin and what he's like when times are a bit tough.

Also Chris Tremain needs to be in any conversation about bowlers. You can't deny his form over a long time.

Doran has been good and should be in the conversation.
Patterson is a solid player but he just isn't turning enough starts into something special.
Edwards is an interesting one, I read somewhere that he averaged less than 20 in grade cricket and yet still still got the call up.
Weatherald and Lehmann just need to back it up now,

Tremain is around the mark

My thoughts are though that there are no players with compelling results that demand their inclusion and the selectors will have to punt or go back to players who have been tried before.

I think we're at the stage where selectors need to take a punt on which of these youngsters has the potential to be a 20 test century player, put them in the middle order and leave them there for a dozen tests - irrespective of Shield performance.

Whether that's Pucovski, Doran, Labushagne – I think the selectors need to decide who they think is the most talented and invest in them for a summer.

And there lies the problem, they tend to give up quickly.

Just saw an article in the HUN that listed a number of the younger guys and they seemed to have backed your assessment of Jake Weatherald as a potential bolter.

SELECTORS should not be afraid to gamble on youth as an undermanned Australian side prepares to take on India and Sri Lanka on home soil, according to the man charged with presenting cricket’s next generation.

Australia’s batting line-up is diminished in the absence of A-graders Steve Smith and David Warner, while the Marsh brothers, Shaun and Mitchell, failed to fire in the Middle East and an injury cloud hangs over Usman Khawaja (knee).

It sets the scene for a bolter to be named for the First Test against India starting on December 6 in Adelaide.

National Performance Program head coach Troy Cooley said South Australian Jake Weatherald was waiting for his chance.

“He’s ready,” Cooley told the Herald Sun of the left-hander who may best be known as the Striker who blasted a ton in this year’s Big Bash final.

“Score some runs, the door opens up and I think he’s got the maturity and the game to succeed.

“He’s going to be ready for the opportunity; that means making every day a winner and he’s got a great attitude.

“We had him up here (in Brisbane) this winter … he’s probably a bit older, but he identified he really wanted to work hard on some aspects of his batting that he wasn’t happy with … and he really, really excelled.”


Cooley said selectors should be excited rather than nervous about handing an international debut to a youngster following the Sheffield Shield double century scored by 20-year-old Victorian Will Pucovski last week.

“I get excited … we don’t put people up unless they’re capable,” Cooley said.

“I think age is not a limit, otherwise (India) wouldn’t have picked a Sachin Tendulkar and those sort of people.

“You’ve got to have the right qualities, otherwise you do young people an injustice.

“ … Jack Edwards hit JLT for the first time and showed that — don’t get scared about putting kids in who we think have got the talent because they might just surprise you.

“And don’t we like surprises.”

First-season Australian coach Justin Langer, speaking after his side failed to pass 164 in either innings of the second Test against Pakistan, had a positive message for players banging down the door.

“If I’m a young batsman in Australia it’s a pretty exciting time. If you work really hard on your basic game and you learn how to make runs then there will be huge opportunities in the Australian cricket team,” Langer said.

The national performance program has schooled its budding batsman on spin and swing with the next breed determined to master their approach to the bowling that has challenged Australians in the past.

“Over 90 per cent of the kids who make it come through the pathway - it’s a great breeding ground,” Cooley said.

“We run the rule over them, we know how important first-class cricket is.

“We know from our stats if you haven’t made first-class cricket by the age of 23, it’s going to be very, very hard for you and the numbers aren’t on your side to making it through to Test level.

“These young men have got good attributes and if they keep consistently performing they get an opportunity, or an opportunity opens up, I think they’ve got every chance to take it.”

Marcus Harris is nearing a double century which is exactly what he needed to do. Unfortunately for him is that Shaun Marsh has probably done enough to keep his spot with a 72 not out so far.

In other news, Will Pucovski is taking an indefinite break from the game as he battles a mental health issue. I hope he is OK
