The best batting performance you've seen in Australia?

I'd like to hear peoples nomination for the best batting performance by an Australian cricketer in Test, Shield or even limited over cricket in Australia?

If we can get some interest in this I'll start a thread about the best bowling by an Australian in Australia as well but now it's just about the batters.

It doesn't have to be about the most runs just a spectacle that really grabbed your interest. It could be a game you attended or one that you saw on TV

Langer in Hobart, him and Gilly winning the unwinnable against Pakistan.

Not just cricket, but one of the best sporting performances against the odds I've ever seen.

Shit opposition, but anyone who can smash out 380 at the WACA in a test match played a seriously good innings.

Years ago I went to a shield game at the Junction oval and watched Jamie Siddons make 200 in a day against a strong bowling attack from NSW. It was a dominant display and I still can't believe he never played test cricket.

Brian Lara 277 at the SCG in 1992/3. Most technically perfect innings I’ve ever seen - only a run out would dismiss him.

Ricky Ponting's 196 at the Gabba against the Poms in 2006 or Michael Clarke's 329* against the Indians in 2012.

There was something timeless about Clarke's innings - like absolutely nothing could have even troubled him. I reckon the only other player I've seen hit that same state was Alastair Cook in 2010-11.

If you follow the opening post it's actually by an Australian in Australia

Re: The best batting performance you've seen in Australia?

I never liked the man but Kim Hughes played the best innings I have ever seen and got exactly 100 (out of 198) on day one v the Windies at the MCG in the early '80s. Off all the people in the world it fell to Terry Alderman to stick around at no. 11 and shepherd Hughes from his 60s to his 100 and they put in a last wicket partnership of 40 or 50 (which ended up being the difference between the sides) before DK Lillee destroyed the Windies in the last half hour of the first day and left them 4/10 (Lillee 3/1, Alderman 1/6-Viv Richards bowled through the gate by DK with the last ball of the day, it made Lillee my fave sportsman for years afterwards) We stood out on the ground and sang until Lillee came out on the players balcony so we could worship him.

I know this started out being about Kim Hughes but DK Lille sort of took over!

It wasn't a classical test match knock, but watching Adam Gilchrist dismantle the Poms at the WACA in 2005 was simply joyful.

Glenn McGrath getting 50 as a number 11, middling everything to the leg side. Plus Dizzy getting a 50 and Happy Gilmoring's his bat around. For their position down the order, and their highest scores in Australia and sheer unadulterated entertainment for the change rooms, crowd and viewers, that was a best batting partnership performance.

Thanks GVGjr - only saw the thread heading and immediately thought of Lara at the SCG.

TD stole my thunder. Kim Hughes 100no out of 198 against the Windies in 1981 Boxing Day was peerless considering the pitch and the extraordinary high quality of the opposition bowling attack.

Honorable mention - Steve Waugh's grinding double century against the Windies in 94-95 (I had to look up the years).

He soaked up a lot of punishment and it wasn't pretty but for sheer will to get through hours and hours of the last real pace barrage the Windies could put together it's certainly up there.

Best innings I've seen full stop, ever, and I was not a huge fan of Hughes by any means.

David Warner's 123n.o. in Tasmania on day 5 of ultimately a losing Test against NZ was a brilliant innings. He made 100 more than the next highest scorer and almost scrounged a highly unlikely draw in just his 4th innings.

That was a close third for me. It was his first century in only his second test too.

I reckon James Pattinson debuted in that series too and tore through the Kiwis at the Gabba.
