Amazing article. Does he want test matches played in complete silence? Did Keith Miller and Ray Lindwall never say a word to batsmen?


All this from a bloke who nearly had test cricket die under his watch-Test cricket nearly died from boredom in the late '50s and '60s-right when Harvey's influence was at it's peak. I'd rather take instruction from Chopper Read on how to improve the police force than instruction from prople like Harvey about what's best for cricket.



Oh and dont get me started on 'the Untouchables". My club cricket team could have remained undefeated on a tour of a country that had the absolute BeJesus bombed out of it for 5 years previously. If yuo want to compare it to recent Australian teams then where's the quaility spinner? How did the fielding standards rate between the two sides? It might have had Bradman, but Bradman was in his 40s by then and he was as mortal as the next batsman.

Influence? OK. I can kinda give you this one. Warne personally made leg spin cool again and is responsible for about a million school kids trying to bowl leg spin.

Results? Sorry. There is no arguement that can be made here. A bloke who made 100 every 2.5 innings affects the results of games. When he can make 300 in a day (we reckon our side is shit hot for making 300 in a day - Bradman did it on his own) that is likely to affect the result of a game. He scored so heavily and so quickly they could always win. How would you like to be an opposition captain - 350 ahead at tea on day 4, when do you declare?

Charisma? Bradman had lots. Warnie has it in 44 gallon drums in his garage that he hasn't even used yet.

I suppose Warnie was a better batsman that Bradman was a legspinner.

Overall Influence/Affect on a game, OK?


Bradman's batting deadly on days 1 and 2, potent day 3, better than most, days 4 and 5.

Warnie's bowling potent days 1, 2 and 3 deadly, day 4, something else, I dunno, bloodlysuperdeadlyIguess, day 5.


Fielding

From all accounts Bradman was among the most athletic and graceful fieldsman of his time. His throwing arm was deadly enough that when he occasanialy hit a batsmen running between wickets accusations were made of him deliberatly targeting batsmen and of dangerous behaviour. I think Warnie would have done this if he'd thought of it.

What Warnie did do is turn himself from a fairly dismal mid off/on into Mark Taylor's logical successor at first slip. That he took over from as great a slipper as Taylor without a hitch says volumes for his fielding abilty. First slip is the most important fielding spot-if your first slip cant catch I dont care how many runs you make you aint going to win.


So they were both important in the field.


Bradmans bowling. IIRC his one test wicket was Wally Hammond. Bowling average of 27 or something. Negligible.

Warnies batting. If he werent quite so impatient, or he had Steve Waugh's abiltity to find the red ink, Warnies batting average would have been much higher. Always at his best when the screws were on he really should have had 4 or 5 test centurys to go with the gazillion test wickets.

OK. The Dons an icon and would give me a century nearly every game and a half. But give me Shane anyday-He would win me more matches, let me bot a ciggy whenever I ran out, argue with me about football and I'd know that the other mob knew whether he had the bat or the ball in his hand or what session it was it was going to be us that won the game.

First slip is the most important fielding spot-if your first slip cant catch I dont care how many runs you make you aint going to win.

In this test Katich has dropped 3 catches to go with the sitter he dropped in the first which makes 4 that i am aware of.

I was listening very early this morning. Edwards whacked Lee through midwicket for 4. Jim Maxwell said "It might go for 4. It will go for 4, Katich is the fieldsman".
