The first Cox plate I went to was in 1975. After pouring all night the track was a quagmire. The NZ horse Furys Order ploughed through the mud and won easily, then the rest of the days racing was abandoned.

Rising Fast may be worth consideration - only horse to win the treble in the same year (and in a special year - 1954).

Rising Fast is one of the ones I ummed and ahhed about, but Might and Power's dominance in his Caulfield and Melbourne Cup wins.

There's a bit of a 'sliding doors' discussion to be had when it comes to Might and Power and the Cox Plate.

Jack Denham had the option of running him in the 97 Cox Plate after he smashed the field in the Caulfield Cup, but he opted to skip it and concentrate on the Melbourne Cup instead.

With apologies to Dane Ripper, Might and Power would have crushed the 97 field as a 4yo, but would he have had enough in the tank to win the Melbourne Cup afterwards? How he held off Doriemus at the line that year I'll never know.

Love the Cox Plate. Have been to the last 15, with So You Think, Winx and Lys Gracieux being the stand out horses in terms of sheer ability.
Memorable years on the punt for me would be Maldivian, Ocean Park and Shamus Award's years.

I also recall So You Think's second win, on that day I think he won at $1.60, a young Black Caviar won at about $1.40 and Precedence won for Cummings at $2.30 - and the favourite punters filled up on the doubles and trebles.

I've been to quite a few over the same period, at least 5 times, maybe more. I hate Moonee Valley as a spectator, I only go as I have mates that love it.

You either stand out the back where you can't see the track and funnel in and out of the tunnel or stay on the front lawn where you can't move. I much prefer Flemington where you can see the track, access a bar, toilet and bookies within a reasonable area and be able to move around freely.

Still remember the first time watched her. It was the 2010 Patinack Farm Classic on Stakes Day. I was astonished how easily she'd won. Nolen never really let her go in that race and she still won by 4.
