Re: FIFA Womans World Cup 2023

What a great tournament across the board and for the Matildas. The team that captured the nation. I remember the emotion of our 2006 men’s team and how much it meant to make a World Cup but this has was next level stuff. Amazing. Well run events, sold out venues, great atmospheres around; everyone in a happy mood - hope the next one has the same level of euphoria.

The only downside was the joke that is Sydney Trains (apologies to the Melbourne folk and other non Sydney folk on here - lucky you) - it took three hours to get home after the semi - thousands of fans (including international visitors) were pretty much left stranded at the station (first world problem) without a clue what was happening. How to move thousands from an event!!! It was like waiting at border of Czechoslovakia in the mid 80s - no idea what was going on and what happens next.

I think they did well, but need a new coach. Great achievement for Australian Women's sport.
They made the semis and you're asking to sack the manager?

Tremendous results by the Matildas but I dont know enough about soccer to know if the coach is a great one for us.
On results he stays in the job doesnt he?

          Has to.

First time Australia ever make the semi finals of a WC, without their best player.

Not sack but don?t renew his contract. Depth issue wasn’t dealt with 2 years ago by Gustavsson. Wishful thinking using basically the same starting line ups for all games and only 17 players til the semi. Eg Why was Kyah Simon even in the squad?
            Usa can have him.
Don’t start me with style of play adopted.

She started the last 2 games and we lost both.
We actually played a better style without her.

BAD may have been having a bit of tongue in cheek about we make finals and sack Bevo calls.
I know nothing about soccer I used to watch regularly but stop a couple of decades ago when diving was introduced.

We aren’t a minnow in women’s soccer. Ranked 10 playing in your backyard and we were a penalty miss from being eliminated in the quarters.

Your point being? France ranked 5 in the world. We could have also drawn level and actually win against England (current Euro champs and one of the pre tournament favourites). Bloody good effort from our team and the coach was a part of that. No reason the coach doesn’t stay.

                      Sack Sam?

We made the semi finals with her playing off the bench a couple of times from memory.

Maybe we should ask Emma Hayes for a few tips.

Where did I imply sack Sam? I said we played better without her. She made one magnificent shot in all her games.
The coach failing in using her well.

Fair enough. Don't agree on coach. Interesting discussion though.

There does seem to be a ground swell of negativity around him, I really don't get it. I've followed the game closely for years I thought his tactics were sound.

He's also generated some great gifs with his sideline antics!

Ask the Australian soccer media then about the coach.
No doubting the achievement, but the point was a little lucky.
Good enough coach to get us to the semi but not further with those lineups and strategy.
They can win the tournament with better management. As I said before this tournament was lost 12-24 months ago.

Ripping final so far end to end stuff. Spain deserved lead at the half. Vamos!
