        Re: Nhl

        NHL season is underway.

My Bruins have butchered the contract situation with the goalie position, going from two very high quality tenders, to potentially none! An absolute balls up. Interesting case study in what not to do, I think.

AWIHL also just around the corner. Our connection to the Melbourne Ice women’s team remains with Neila Brenning in the squad, challenging the Bont for top athlete status! She’s part of a championship defending squad, so might even be a nose in front. It’s a cheap and exciting afternoon at the rink and I’d encourage you to have a squizz sometime.

NHL 4 Nations is a couple of days away, which should see some high quality, skilled games played between USA, Canada, Finland and Sweden.

I'll be interested to see how much the players put into it. Typically these types of events, World Cup of Hockey / Olympic Hockey are really high level with a great deal of physical investment. The line up is a cavalcade of stars.

Recommend if you get the chance to turn in.

            Can't wait.

I've been loving the NHL this year. After watching the docco thing on Prime (which I loved) I made an effort to try and watch again - have loved the NHL live but just following the puck on tv was too hard...funnily enough on the massive electronic wall that passes as a tv set in 2025 it isn't so hard....and my 100% dissatisfaction with the constant time outs, fouls and whining of NBA players has really spoiled the basketball for me...so I've been watching - shame Fox keep showing Blackhawks games.

My daughter and I are keen to get along to the Ice Arena over here (it's only 10-mins from my house) to watch the Oz league so...let's go "whatever the Perth based ice hockey team is called".
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

There’s been some stellar performances this year so far and interesting stories to follow, including Ovi’s chase, injury and comeback. Even in a pretty ordinary season for the Bruins, I’ve found myself watching multiple games a week. Amazon series a definite factor for me too. Penguins and Blackhawks get a very good run from Fox Sports, always have!

the silver lining for my team having a stinker is that the bandwagon might drop off and I’ll get cheaper tickets when I visit next season.

Perth Thunder just announced a few imports, one of which is coming over from the SPHL which tends to mean they’ll dominate here. I recommend getting down there for a look when the men’s league starts. The girls, the Perth Inferno are very strong too, their coach is a ripper of a fella.

My daughter is reverse sexist - no AFLW and (she's announced) no girls Ice Hockey.

                So the Thunder it is.

When I was in the US I manged to get to a few Canucks games in the green man era and they are kinda my team I guess but my heart isn't is it right now. So I'm kind of on the look out.

It's pretty hard to look past the story with the Dallas Stars this year - whilst I have never loved Dallas the place I did love (LOVE) Austin so I'm kind of tempted...the Steelers are my NFL team (due to a Steelers Browns game I watched on "Don Lane Tonight" aged about 12) and the Warriors/A's my basketball/Baseball teams due to love of the bay (and North West in general) and I kind of let the Canucks be my team for that reason.

Happy to take input - but it wont be the Blackhawks and it wont be the Pens (Pittsburgh wasn't a great place when I went there - apparently it's better now)...I'm kind of drawn to the Kraken but that seems like the road to eternal damnation...

Pick a Canadian team where possible. Although Bettman absolutely hates Canadian teams, I find it's more enjoyable as it's their no 1 sport. Canucks would be a great choice imo. I'm for montreal (bulldogs colours and they won in OT when I watched them over there). Any Canadian team that isnt the leafs or senators would be fun.

                      Re: sexist daughters

I am always trying to role model to my daughter that the women’s leagues are worthy of following and supporting. We get to a lot of the girls games here, the Matilda’s whenever they are in town and the AFLW too. She’s gone off AFLW because it’s “boring,” the Matilda’s she loves the whole event but stopped playing. Hockey she will go and watch the women’s games and barrack and enjoy it, but she’s also, without any prompting recognising the difference in physicality and speed. “I prefer the men’s hockey dad, they get stuck in more” I will always defend the women’s game though, because I think of all the sports, women’s hockey has the smallest gap in play style and quality to the men’s.

I'm fairly obsessed with a trip to the Canadian Artic right now (Baffin Island here I come)...but that's more likely going to tie in with Ottawa I guess...and you said no Senators. I can stick with the Canucks and I am a bit connected but it feels like their games are never on and - well - Quinn Hughes aside the current side doesn't really grab me...But maybe I invest in a Hughes jersey and go all the way!

Re Canada and things Canadian - I am totally obsessed with the Canadian Artic right now - just cannot stop thinking about it. I feel like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall - he was obsessed with Mars and I just want to go to Baffin Island. My missus is like the guy at Recall with his "How about a nice trip to Saturn" diatribe - she's all "Haw about the Bahamas - remember we were supposed to go but then that flight from Miami got cancelled and we never made it....". All I can say is show me the polar bears.

I watch the AFLW and she doesn't - she's netball all the way and runs a Specialist Netball program (she's a high school teacher) at her school and is connected in with the Fever etc etc. She loves footy but cannot stand the AFLW and a lot of what she says is hard to argue with.

I've spent a decent amount of time in Canada. I nearly did a trip to Churchill to see the Polar bears but the logistics and timing didn't work out. I also nearly went up to the Arctic circle after a trip to tombstone NP (which is amazing) but decided against it after we were told it's just a sign.

Why does a trip to the Arctic tie in with Ottawa the most? Ottawa aren't actually a bad team per se. The only reason I said to avoid is because they often struggle for fans and are perpetually rumoured with relocation and not holding onto their stars. They also often get outnumbered by opposition fans in their own stadium (at least when playing toronto or montrea). They're a bit like the giants or suns.

As advertised, the power play for Canada was exquisite. Super crisp skills.

Had to laugh watching Brad Marchand get cheered in the Bell Centre.

It's funny what can happen when guys like that play for your team.

4 nations has already been a success. Much better than the all star game. But I don't think they could do it every year without it going stale.

They could combine it with Olympics and world cup so that a national tournament is played every 2 years and an all star game the other year.
