Brisbane get 2032 Olympics

In a pandemic with budgets federal and state shot for 50 years, $5,000,000,000++ for two weeks of sports that very few follow and/or aren’t the highest achievement seems a huge waste of money. I love sport, but I don’t get this. But whatever, yeah for us, we won something no one else in the world wanted.

This need to be one of those very small occasions the games make a profit like the US did but I don't think the world would have recovered enough by then and the yanks know how to make a buck and put on a show also they have the population to cover the event.
If you want to go really pessimistic we should be shoring up home defenses rather than spending money on games that may not take place.

It does seem a bit extravagant given the times, and the fact no one else bid seems most of the world agrees. I am looking forward to the GABBA getting a decent rebuild though. It's a pretty tired stadium and the infrastructure upgrades will make it much easier to get to and from the ground and home again to the suburbs.

Reporting is that:

- Most infrastructure exists already. Don’t forget Gold Coast had commonwealth games not long ago and events will also be staged there.
- IOC put in $2.5billion
- tickets/sponsorships/TV rights cover the balance.
- Gabba upgrade is independent of this but the Olympics prob make the business case for that upgrade even stronger.

They expect it to break even as an event - and so future tourism impact etc becomes gravy.

I’m no big Olympics fan, and I live in Brisbane, but I actually think this is a good thing and Brisbane is good city to host. There’s big economic upside due to the exposure the city will get, and it ultimately shouldn’t cost too much.

All this assumes crowds are back in 11 years… which they will be.

Brisbane can do with this of sporting investment. The GABBA is way overdue for an upgrade
While it might look daunting now I suspect the Games will be a success

I love the Olympics and think its great that Australia has got them again. It was magnificent to have them in Sydney in 2000 and it will be great in 2032.

With everything happening right now, and the games being 11 years away - its natural to feel like its underwhelming right at this moment.

Understand that Olympics is as interesting for everyone - but I would get completely absorbed in it as a kid - and I still am captivated by the swimming events, some of the athletics and the basketball competition.

AFL, cricket and other sports can all utilise quality venues. Australia is very fortunate to have so many quality sporting venues available now and planned for the future.

Anyone who knows John Coates knows that he is a collosal arsehole to everyone and anyone, and would act like this regardless of the gender/immutable characteristic of the other person. This is just another prime example of his unparalleled douchebaggery.
