Manchester United to play two matches in Australia later this year

Manchester United to play two matches in Australia later this year
International football powerhouse Manchester United is set to play two matches at the MCG this July.

As revealed by NCA NewsWire in February, the Red Devils will visit Australia as part of their pre-season tour, with details emerging on Thursday.

United will play friendlies with A-League side Melbourne Victory and Premier League rivals Crystal Palace on July 15 and 19, respectively. Tickets are on sale from 2pm (AEDT) on April 4.

“Our matches in Melbourne will be a wonderful opportunity for international fans to see their favourite players up close in an exciting schedule of games,” said Manchester United’s chief operating officer Collette Roche.

Boasting a star-studded roster that includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Harry Maguire, United is expected to draw large crowds to the MCG, as it did on its last visit to Australia in 2019.

More than 100,000 fans turned out to watch United between its two matches in Perth, but if recent visits to the MCG by other Premier League clubs are anything to go by, they’ll likely attract more this time around.

Manchester City and Real Madrid drew a crowd of 99,382 when they graced the MCG in 2015, while more than 95,000 turned out to watch Liverpool play Melbourne Victory at the ground two years earlier.

The upcoming matches will be United’s first at the MCG since 1999.

The Victorian Government expects Manchester United’s visit will inject millions of dollars into the local economy.

“Manchester United playing at the MCG will be a major drawcard to attract visitors to Melbourne and encourage locals to head into the city for the games,” said minister for employment Jaala Pulford.

“The tour is set to attract tens of thousands of visitors to the city, supporting jobs across our tourism, events and hospitality sectors.

“This is a great opportunity to see one of the world’s greatest sporting teams play in Melbourne – the nation’s sporting capital.”

Care factor is zero. I have been to a few of these games. Unless there is actually something on the line the spectacle can be pretty ordinary. I went to Liverpool at the MCG. You'll never walk alone was amazing but the rest of it was meh.

For me, live sport requires an investment of emotion. Something has to be at stake. These exhibition games don't do it for me.

These are just more Marvel movies. Disposable entertainment as part of a the franchise without any stakes.

        No thanks.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Im a long term Victory member.

Worst part last time was you had an mcg full of Liverpool fans for a night cheering against their home side !

          Walk on….? Jog on !

I’ll undoubtedly go to see CR7 again but agree it’s confectionery.

Yeah that is a fair a point. Will only be friendlies so not much to play for but still good to have them come out nonetheless to Australia.

Ten Hag's team news before Victory friendly
                By Sam Carney

Every pre-season game - including Melbourne Victory (11:05 BST Friday 15 July) - will be shown live on MUTV, now available in our app and on ManUtd.com.

In Thursday's press conference, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag provided an update on Harry Maguire ahead of Friday's game against Melbourne Victory.

The clash with the A-League side is United's second test of Tour 2022, following the marvellous 4-0 victory over Liverpool in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Captain and centre-back Maguire missed that game due to a knock, with Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Alex Telles all getting minutes in central defence instead.

Maguire trained with the rest of the group during our first Melbourne session at AAMI Park after landing on Wednesday and Ten Hag confirmed he is in contention to return, potentially for 45 minutes.

“He is tomorrow available,” said Erik. “We will see [how long for]. I think he can play half a game.”

United gave minutes to 22 of the squad in the win over Jurgen Klopp's side and the Victory fixture could be a good opportunity for the unused substitutes from that game to play, with youngsters like Ethan Laird, Hannibal and Alejandro Garnacho no doubt chomping at the bit to prove themselves on this trip.

“We are full capacity, we have a strong squad so the fans will be happy,” Ten Hag added.

In terms of our opponents, all the attention will be on former United winger Nani, and whether or not he will be able to feature.

The 35-year-old's transfer to Victory was announced on Friday and he has already trained with his new team-mates.

MUTV is the only place to watch Friday’s match in Australia LIVE, with coverage starting an hour ahead of the 11:05 BST kick-off*.

MUTV, United App and ManUtd.com viewers will also have access to the short and extended match highlights before anyone else, as well as the full match replay. So what are you waiting for? Visit MUTV now.

*MUTV live coverage not available in Australia due to domestic broadcast rights.

4-1 win for Man Utd over Melbourne Victory at the MCG. Over 70K there last night. I wonder if the low crowd at the Dogs and Saints game was because some Dogs and Saints fans who are Man United fans decided to go and see United play in Australia which doesn't happen all the time. Good start to our pre season beating Liverpool 4-0 the other day in Bangkok. Still only pre season with the real stuff starting in 3 weeks.
