    Pietersen handed England captaincy

    Pietersen handed England captaincy

KEVIN Pietersen was named as the new captain of England's Test and one-day teams on Monday.

Pietersen, 28, replaces Michael Vaughan, who resigned on Sunday, to become England's 74th Test captain and also takes over the one-day side from Paul Collingwood, who also stepped down at the weekend.

With England's selectors keen to appoint one man to captain all international sides, instead of the split captaincy method they have adopted over the last year, Pietersen was always the favourite because he is virtually the only player guaranteed a place in both teams.

The Hampshire batsman, who captained England in a one-day international against New Zealand earlier this year, will lead England in a Test for the first time in Thursday's final Test against South Africa at The Oval.

“I'm very thrilled and excited to have been given the opportunity to captain England,” he said.

“It's a huge honour and a terrific challenge for me at this stage of my international career.

“I have learned a great deal about leadership from playing under both Michael and Paul and fully appreciate the level of responsibility that comes with the job of captaining your country.

“They are big shoes that I have to fill but I will give it the best possible go. It is a great honour.

“It is something that has turned my life around in the last 24 hours. It has been a very emotional time for me.”

Pietersen insisted the captaincy would not make him temper the aggressive style which has made him one of the world's leading batsman.

“Time will tell but I hope it won't restrict the way I play. I've been successful with my style and I would be foolish to change that,” he said.

National selector Geoff Miller, who heads the selection panel which chose Pietersen, confirmed his role as an established member of all three international teams was a key factor.

“In choosing a new captain, we were keen to identify a player who could lead the team in all three forms of cricket and bring fresh enthusiasm and ideas to the role of captain,” Miller said.

“Kevin is a world-class player who will command the respect of the dressing room and I am sure he will be looking to lead from the front and work closely with both the players and the coaching staff to bring England success in the future.”

captaining England is clearly a curse and Pietersen does not have the strategic nous to do the job any better than any of his contemporaries.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

I'm not sure KP has the maturity to handle the England Captaincy.

Will be an interesting space to watch.

          Who else have they got?
1 England have not got anyone else who would be assured of playing each game.
2 Collingwood stepped down and doesnt want it.
3 Flintoff has said he doesnt want it.
4 Strauss, he is probably the only one, but his form doesnt guarantee a game either.
So in fact it is the only choice.

could be either a genius or idiotic choice. Will enjoy watching England hopefully capitulate.

Any particular reason as to why he isn't a leader?

Indeed, goes to show the rabble that is English Cricket, we've got say 5 players who could step into the role of captain, Strauss wouldn't get a guernsey in Australia. A real head scratcher that that's the best they can come up with in a country of 60 million.

IMO he reeks of individualisms both on and off the field. Plays for himself and his aloofness makes him unapproachable to his team mates, especially new kids coming into the team. This is just what a captain shouldn't be.

I think we should give him a chance before we put him down as a failed leader. No one here has been in the dressing room with him so I think it's a bit tough to be saying he is unapproachable and aloof.
At the end of the day he is the best cricketer England have and the only one that is guaranteed to be picked in all forms of the game.

I saw him interviewed after he made the ton in the first test, really surprised me how different he seemed to the arrogance he looks on the field.
Also watched interview after he was made captain, i think he is a lot more level headed than the press makes him out to be.
Australia didnt get where they are without being arrogant.
One thing is for sure, at least he will bring attacking cricket into the english side, might be just what they need.

If Pietersen was captain a test or 2 ago their:
Captain would be from South Africa
Opening bowler would be from Australia
                            Wicket-Keeper would be from Australia
Star batsman would be from South Africa

(is Strauss from Aus as well?)
