Your favourite cricket bat growing up?

Which cricket bat did you use or have your heart set on as a youngster?

I can remember having a Slazenger as a kid but the a GM Maestro later on.
I purchased the bat from K-Mart straight after Xmas when the price of cricket bats were halved.
If anyone remembers George Costanza buying a suit on an unadvertised sale and how he hid it before that I did something the same with that bat.

Had it for a number of years and was very happy with it. I would sand it back each season and apply the linseed oil and get the pig skin applied to it as it had a hairline crack.

I’ve still got my first cricket bat. It’s a Gray Nicholls Steel Spring Keith Stackpole autograph with the long handle. The rubber grip perished years ago. It’s been under the bed for years just in case of home invasion. The handle would probably snap if used with any force as it’s feeling a bit loose and brittle.

My first bat was a Stuart Surridge I bought from Jack Collins Sport store in Footscray. I worked a weekend helping my dad paint a house in Prahran or Malvern (pretty much the same place for me way back then) to raise the funds. I was so happy to finally get a bat of my own and not have to use the crappy old ones in the club's kit or ask one of my teammates if I could borrow one of theirs.

I used it for ages then when I left school and found a job I got a Duncan Fearnley but didn't really like it so I got a Gray Nicholls instead
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Yeah there are two cricket bats sitting next to the front door just in case someone unwelcome turns up.

Knees first, elbow on the way down then a tap to the testicles if necessary.

          Gray Nicolls scoop.

As soon as I saw one I knew I had to have it.

Yeah, I had some designs on that bat as well. Never purchased one but tried it a couple of times.

If anyone remembers the Lance Cairns SP bat without the shoulders, I think they called it an oar, I used a version of that for indoor cricket. I have fibre glass added to the base of the bat to allow it to slide into the crease a bit better. From memory it was a cheapish bat that I used for 3 or 4 years until I found something better.

My tightarse parents really stitched me up on cricket bats and skateboards.

I had a Slazenger V50 that had that weird laminate on it, that was OK off the middle. I'd much rather not talk about the Rattler skateboard I was given because that was even worse than the V50 cricket bat. Trying to do an ollie on that thing was tough work.

I had a blue version of this.....they were in circulation busting the ankles of kids trying to kickflip up until a few years ago.

They brought out the twin scoop, which made you look uncool if you had the old single.

Damn those marketers getting into our heads early.

SS Jumbo. Viv was one of my biggest childhood sporting heroes.

Would have been just as happy with a Duncan Fearnley as AB was also a massive childhood hero of mine.

Newberry bats. Very popular with the Kiwi cricketers.

                          Excalibur I thought.

I remember in an ODI at the MCG Lance Cairns took 26 or so off a Dennis Lillee over using one of those bats including a one handed top edge that flew over square leg for six. The next ball went three foot over Cairns' (and Rod Marsh's) head for four wides.

Greg Chappell walked up the pitch from first slip and said "now come on Dennis" to which Lillee said "*!*!*!*! it. If that *!*!*!*! isn't going to bat properly then I'm not going to bowl properly"

I didn't start playing competitive cricket until I was 16 in a senior grade - Dad bought me a GM. Lasted a few years until it completely split from the toe up batting one day. Got a lovely Grey Nichols that I accidently left behind after a game one day and never saw again.

For those older woofers, who remembers the Aluminum bat controversy?

                              A reminder:

December 15 1979 saw Lillee walk out to bat in a test with his aluminium bat, to which the England captain profusely objected. 1 year later the laws were changed to state that a cricket bat had to be made of wood.
