    3rd Test Australia v South Africa - Sydney January 4 to 8, 2023

Green is going in for surgery and Starc is preparing for the India tour.

Who comes in? I presume Hazelwood for Starc, but who replaces Green? Does Lance Morris make his test debut?

In Hazlewood and Agar to replace Starc and Green.

There are calls for Green to be replaced by Hardie on a like for like basis.

If that happens then surely Hazlewood can't replace Starc. Hazlewood either replaces Boland or doesn't play.

Why couldn't we go into the test with Cummins, Hazlewood and Boland?
There is a bit of sameness about it but it's a good version of the sameness.

Another player being mentioned to replace Green is Renshaw.

Does anyone think this might be the test where a 'mankad' is initiated? Would anyone of our bowlers be willing to add this too their resume?

If they do it's the end of test cricket.

2 warnings issued in the 2nd test. At what point do we say enough is enough with the non striking batsman being a metre out of their crease?

Been over a hundred years of test cricket without it being a problem, let them back up its risky.

I don't see an issue with the bat leaving the crease once the bowler has leapt into the final stride, and there's really no need for the bat to do so until the bowler has.

If the bat is a metre out of the crease before that then after one warning they're fair game.

That's how I see it but it will still require a brave bowler to pull the trigger on doing it. Cricket has acknowledged it's a problem and changed the rules for it to be called a run out but it remains to be seen if a bowler will do it.

I've always found this the strangest part of cricket. Think Starc was spot on - if a bowler has to keep behind the line, why doesn't the batter when backing up? Once you're out of your crease, you're fair play for mine. Glad to see attitudes changing.

Interesting selections - gives them the option of a pure batting option at 6, the spinning all-rounder at 7, or a 4-man attack with two spinners.

It's a nod that Renshaw is next in line for a batting spot - even if that's in the middle order. I like him up top and would have gone with Handscomb leading into the Indian series, but it's a good reward for Renshaw's strong season. Good player who's ready to be back on the international stage.

Feels like they're primed to give Morris a debut which is bold. I like him and think there's a lot of potential, but I don't think he's ready yet and it feels a bit premature. He'll go for some runs at the SCG and I think South Africa should look to target him.

The other option might be that the umpire can call one short for any runs scored if the the non striking batsman was out of his crease. That will cause a quick rethink.

There is something fundamentally wrong that we will stump or run out a batsman who is out of their crease and regarded that as brilliant work but we will just allow the non striker to be a metre or more out of their crease because of the backlash of running him/her out. By all means give them a warning as is the tradition but I hope teams are willing to pull up the batsman.

I would do it in a heartbeat.

Those are the rules. Stretch them if you like but if you're run out doing it - shrug-.
