    Marcus Trescothick admits Ashes cheating

    From the HUN: (exert only)

FORMER England batsman Marcus Trescothick has admitted in a new book he illegally shone the ball by sucking on breath fresheners during the 2005 Ashes series.

The virtually unplayable reverse swing generated by pace bowlers Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff - which was crucial to England's Ashes triumph over Australia - may have been caused by Murray Mints, which, as with other artificial substances, is illegal.

The saliva from these mints aided swinging, Trescothick wrote in his autobiography Coming Back To Me.

Re: Marcus Trescothick admits Ashes cheating

Will the Aussie papers ever get over losing the ashes once in twenty odd years??
Blaming mints now and MAY have caused it, written as if Trescothick had done scientific experiments on Murray mints and knew it would happen.
Ran the story 3 years ago when it happened and didnt get any interest in it then.
I would take this article on what it is, digging for some controversy so people will buy his book.

Funny this comes out as the poms got more medals than the Aussies in the Olympics.
Best thing to happen was Aussies losing that ashes series, made it all mean something again.

Every bowler I ever played cricket with used his own saliva to shine the ball, most used chewy.

Hardly the crime of the century.

I remember after the Ashes someone wrote about how counties used mints to get reverse swing.

The Poms proclaimed "we aren't cheaters" even when no one really accused them.

Makes sense that they were so sus.

But minties are used specially for swing. The blokes in the counties yelled at an Aussie for chewing his because he was wasting it.

Wonder if it was spearmint or peppermint?
Might use it at club level

Might chew one when i am batting see if it helps me when i swing my bat, because i havent got near one in years.
Hey theres a thought If i chew one when batting will it negate the bowlers swing?

As a cheeky bunch of 15 year olds, we had a kid in our Under 16s team who fielded in the gully who had a small tube of sunscreen in his pocket to help me 'shine the ball'.

Geez I took some wickets that season!!

Hang on a sec. If this were the Pakistanis....
"To me it is a total hypocrisy on what is deemed to be ball tampering. When Pakistan were accused of ball tampering it was built into something that was abhorrent. Ball tampering is ball tampering whether you scratch the ball or whether you deliberately put in sugary saliva on it to aid its shine so I don't see any difference between one and the either.

"There are huge inconsistencies for one side to complain about the other scratching the ball when they are deliberately sucking sugary sweets to shine the ball," -Angus Fraser
make what you will of the whole thing there does need to be some definition of what's legal
