2023/24 - Australia Summer of Cricket

Not a huge summer of Test Cricket vs Pakistan and West Indies but as Australia starts to transition away from Warner and perhaps a replacement for Smith needs to emerge it could be a summer of opportunities for our domestic cricketers

Warner replacement should be found from either Harris, Renshaw or Bancroft and there is an outside chance Travis Head moves to the top of the order.

Grooming someone to eventually replace Smith isn't as clear but there does seem to be hard choice to make between WA boys Mitch Marsh and Cameron Green for the number 6 spot and in time we might add a 3rd WA local in Aaron Hardie to that as well.

Could there also be a move to replace Carey with Inglis?

It should be an interesting summer of cricket.

Interesting to see an article promoting Beau Webster as an all rounder

He's been in excellent form but his bowling is just medium pace and I feel at the test level it wouldn't be overly threatening.
If we was doing a Funky Miller and bowling some medium pace and his old offies now that could be an excellent combination on the slower tracks in some countries. I'll keep a bit more of an eye on him now.

Australia beat India in the T20 last night mainly due a brilliant century from Glenn Maxwell. He hit 8 x 4 and 8 x 6's in his 104no off 48 deliveries. He also bowled one over last night and went for 30.

The win was secured on the last ball of the innings.

I don't understand why we are playing these T20s after the ODI WC. I think a better schedule would have been for players to come back and join the domestic series and get ready for our Summer of cricket.

Australia first Test squad: David Warner’s farewell tour hopes alive

Australian selection chair George Bailey says David Warner has "earnt" his Test spot after the veteran's farewell tour was all but assured on Sunday.

Warner features in a 14-man squad for the Aussies’ opening Test of the summer against Pakistan in Perth starting next week, effectively guaranteeing he will play his planned three final Tests before retiring from the format.

There were no surprises in the squad, which includes emerging WA paceman Lance Morris, who is line to make his Test debut this summer.

Australia’s strong Test year, capped by a World Test Championship crown and Ashes retention reduced the urgency for change despite Warner averaging less than 30 with the bat in Test cricket in well over three years.

"This group, led by Pat Cummins, has built a strong resume over an extended period. We believe they have earnt the opportunity to start in our first home Test match at the beginning of the New World Test Championship cycle," Bailey said.

"Thirteen members of the squad were part of the victorious World Test Championship and successful Ashes tours over the winter and Lance Morris has been recalled after recovering from his back injury over the same period."

Matt Renshaw, Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris will continue to push their cases to replace Warner in a Prime Minister's XI match against the tourists this week in Canberra.

"As ever, there will be opportunities in the short to medium term to break into this squad and we look forward to seeing the continued strong performances from players who have been performing domestically, many of whom will get a tremendous opportunity in the PM’s XI fixture against Pakistan later this week."

AUSTRALIAN SQUAD FOR FIRST TEST V PAKISTAN

Pat Cummins (captain), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, Lance Morris.

Who would you have in the side between Marsh and Green? I just don't think Marsh is capable of bowling enough overs to be regarded as an all-rounder and I think Green is at least his equal with the bat.

I personally feel we should stick it out with Green considering how young and how much we have invested in him. It feels that this is the first softish test summer we have and would be good to get him so confidence against some easier opponents. Many seem to forget his maiden 100 against india which was only this year. I have been a huge Marsh fan over the years and also do feel he does have the right to start the summer considering his ashes performances.

If Australia is to go down the route of a batting re-shuffle which is what Mcdonald has hinted what is everyones thoughts on how this would structure up.
The options being floated have been Marnus, Head and Marsh. Personally I feel with guys such as Warner (retiring this summer), smith and Usman finishing up soon it is really important to keep Marnus at 3. I think Marsh's technique would get found out at the 1 or 2, however I really don't see why Head couldn't move up to open. This is if Head was happy to do so but I feel he could make the adjustment considering he does open in the whiteball formats whilst he has come in quite a few occassions during the 2nd new ball (I understand it is easier coming in when the quicks have already had 2-3 spells).
I am very much a cricket traditionalist and I would love to see Renshaw get a proper crack at opening again but a batting side with Head opening with Green and Marsh at 5 and 6 would definitely create a lot of excitement and follow the modern trends of test match batting.

I am in this camp. Green is the best all-rounder that this country has produced since Richie Banaud

I think the "Softish" summers is what kills him though. More often than not he's going to come in at 4/400 where he just needs to make quick runs as opposed to batting properly. I'd personally start with Marsh and give Green a few games in the Sheffield shield to really knock the door down. If I had it my way, my first test team would've been:

                      Bancroft
                      Khawaja
                      Labuschagne
                      Smith
                      Head
                      Marsh
                      Carey (wk)
                      Cummins (c)
Starc (Criminally overrated but need the P.O.D being a left arm bowler)
                      Lyon
                      Hazlewood

                      12th Man: Morris

Did anyone see what South Africa did with their selection of a test squad to tour NZ?
This a huge kick in the groin for Test cricket

Test cricket has copped one of its most indignant blows in its 146-year history.

It is the start of a trend which could do more damage to the five day game than match-fixing, chucking dramas or rebel tours put together.

It came with the simple naming of South Africa’s squad for next month’s two Test tour of New Zealand.

South Africa have kept their biggest stars at home to play for their new T20 tournament which started in 2023 and which is being used to financially underpin a cricket system running desperately short of funds.

South Africa’s T20 franchises are owned by wealthy and influential Indian Premier League owners who wanted the nation’s best players to stay put.

The squad of 14 contains seven players who have never even played a Test including a captain, Neil Brand, who is one of those rookies.

Brand has scored almost 4000 first class runs at an average of 40 but to be handed the captaincy of one of the game’s most iconic teams in such circumstances is a dim reflection on the future of Test cricket.

Among the unusual selections are off-spinner Dane Piedt, who played nine Tests between 2014 and 2019 before becoming a T20 journeyman and moving to the United States. He has been chosen with 37-year-old leg-spinner Shaun von Berg.

South Africa asked New Zealand to reschedule the series but that declined on the basis they were already committed to a tight summer program with Australia touring there later in the summer.

South Africa’s call has sent a cold chill through the cricket world though Pakistan statistician Mazher Arshad claimed on social media it would be the game’s new reality.

“South Africa’s decision to send a second-string team totally makes sense,’’ Arshad said. “Any country outside the big three (Australia, India and England) who is not prioritizing T20 cricket is shooting itself in the foot.’’
