Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Celtic feature in a new Champions League format this season - here's everything you need to know...

How does the new 'league phase' format work?

The 36 teams form a single league, with each entrant playing eight different clubs, four at home and four away. Three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw.

The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the knockout stages, while the teams finishing in ninth to 24th place will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure a place in the last 16 of the competition.

The bottom 12 teams will be eliminated with no access to the Europa League.

      Wednesday's Champions League fixtures...

      Bologna vs Shakhtar Donetsk

Sparta Prague vs Red Bull Salzburg

      Celtic vs SK Slovan Bratislava

      Club Brugge vs Borussia Dortmund

      Manchester City vs Inter Milan

      Paris Saint-Germain vs Girona

      Thursday's Champions League fixtures...

      Crvena Zvezda vs Benfica

      Feyenoord vs Bayer Leverkusen

      Atalanta vs Arsenal

      Atletico Madrid vs RB Leipzig

      Brest vs Sturm Graz

      Monaco vs Barcelona

How will the knockout play-off phase work?

Teams that finish between ninth and 16th will be seeded in the knockout phase play-off draw, meaning they will face a team placed 17th to 24th.

The eight clubs that prevail in the knockout phase play-offs will then progress to the round of 16, where they will each face one of the top-eight finishers, who will be seeded.

The pairings of the knockout phase will also be partly determined by the league phase rankings, with a draw which lays out the route for teams to reach the final.

How many points do you need to qualify for the knockout rounds?

A new format brings new expectations in the Champions League this season, with clubs looking at the mathematics to see how many points they would need to qualify for the knockout rounds in the league phase structure.

The Opta supercomputer believes 16 points from a possible 24 - so five wins and a draw from eight matches, or other combinations - would almost certainly be enough to finish in the top eight, which guarantees you a last-16 spot in the New Year.

The data also believes 15 points - so five wins from eight games, or other combinations - could be enough to sneak into eighth place, with that points tally being enough in 73 per cent of Opta's 50,000 simulations of the league phase.

Fourteen points, so four wins and two draws or other combinations, is unlikely to be enough for a top-eight finish - so the race to five wins is likely to be the target for the biggest sides.

To finish in the top 24, which guarantees you a play-off spot at least, Opta believes 10 points - so three wins and a draw, or other combinations - will almost certainly guarantee you a place in that round.

It means teams who win in the opening round of Champions League fixtures need just seven points from the remaining seven games to guarantee themselves a play-off spot.

Nine points - so three wins from eight games, or other combinations - could be enough to finish 24th, with that points tally being enough in 69 per cent of the simulations.

But just eight points - so two wins and two draws, or other combinations - runs the risk of elimination, with that points tally being sufficient in just 16 per cent of the simulations.

Teams will be targeting at least three wins from eight to give them the best possible chance of reaching the Champions League knockout rounds.

Manchester United, Tottenham and Rangers are still in this seasons Europa League; all three teams have a chance of finishing in the top eight; Chelsea finished top of the Conference League table; Hearts were eliminated

Europa League 2024/25 explained: Everything you need to know about format, fixtures, key dates and draw
Manchester United and Tottenham have automatically qualified for this season's Europa League; Chelsea will take part in the Europa Conference League; the 'league stage' draw takes place on August 30; the final will be held in Bilbao, Spain, on May 21 2025

The 2024/25 campaign will mark the 54th edition of the Europa League, but the first under its revamped format. So, what's new? And what are the crucial changes to this year's competition?

What is the new Europa League format?

The biggest change relates to the competition's group stage, which will become a single 36-team 'league stage'.

Each club will face eight DIFFERENT teams, with four home fixtures and four away.

The top eight overall advance directly to the round of 16.

Teams that finish ninth to 24th will then compete in the knockout play-offs, with victors progressing to the last 16.

The knockout phase remains as was.

When are the 2024/25 Europa League draws?

        League stage: August 30 2024

Knockout round proper: February 21 2025

Which teams have qualified for the league phase?

Seven domestic cup winners qualify automatically, along with five other teams by virtue of their domestic league placing.

The current holders of the Europa Conference League (Olympiakos) are also guaranteed a spot.

        England: Manchester United, Tottenham
        Scotland: Rangers
        Spain: Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad

The 2024/25 Europa League campaign will conclude at the Estadio de San Mames in Bilbao, Spain, on May 21 2025.

What is the Europa Conference League?

A third season-long European club competition was introduced in 2021/22 in the form of the Europa Conference League.

Chelsea are part of qualifying for this year's edition, alongside Kilmarnock from Scotland. Hearts will also be involved if they fail to qualify for the Europa League.

In the Europa Conference League - renamed the UEFA Conference League - teams will have six matches against six different opponents in the league phase. Games will be played between September and December.

In the Europa League we give up a 2-0 lead against Porto and draw 3-3.

Harry McGuire to the rescue with the equaliser at the end after Porto went ahead 3-2. Bruno Fernandes with another red card.

We drew our first Europa League match at home as well to Twente 1-1.

So undefeated so far in the Europa League but 0 wins and 2 draws.

First win for Amorim as our new manager.

We beat Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt 3-2.

We went 1-0 up early on via Garnacho but that was short lived after Bodo/Glimt scored 2 quick goals to get back the lead. Rasmus saved the day with a further 2 goals to get the lead back and we held on from there.

Still concerns defensively but nice to get a win.

Amazing result for Feyenoord coming from 3 goals v Man City at Etihad to draw 3-3. Basically 3-0 down with Qtr of an hour left on the clock. Not City’s best week.

This was followed by PSV coming from 2-0 down and scoring 3 from the 87th minute against Shahktar Doneskt.

Two great nights for Dutch football.

We draw 2-2 with Lyon in the first leg in France and go back to Old Trafford Aggregate 2-2.

Unfortunate we could not hold one for the win in the end.

Spurs draw as well in their first leg game at home to Frankfurt.

We really missed Saka when he was injured which dented our chance in the EPL - another year running second, but if we can go all the way in the CL - that would be great compensation.

Did you see the guy grabbing Saka as he went down the race. Most entitled team on earth.
