Jones is probably the gifted female athlete I have seen however, for years many of the other athletes she trained with including her husbands and boyfriends were picked off as PE drug takers which always cast huge doubts that she was 'clean'.

She eventually got caught, purged herself and even went to jail and yet she stated last week on Oprah that she never knowingly took PE drugs although she will concede that she did take PE drugs as part of the supplements her coach was giving her.
Why can't these athletes just simply fess up that they tried to get an edge but had been caught?

Surely any articulate person who had seen so many of her training partners caught would be far more diligent and street wise to the potential problems of taking 'vitamins supplements' from her coach?

Are these athletes so affected by the drugs they have lost the ability to just be honest?

Marion Jones is a dirty filthy stinking drug cheat and no matter how many tears or protests of innocence she is nothing more than that.

The rewards are obviously great for some of these athletes so they run the gauntlet of being caught. These selfish, greed infested people are the ones they may one day ultimately bring down many sports as we know them. Sadly, people are turning off some Olympic sports and Tour de France and many others because they are losing their credibility when time after time their athletes get caught cheating. There can only be so much supporter tolerance before they get sick of it.

Everytime I hear of a world record or similar my first reaction is scepticism and I hate that.

I reckon the problem with people like Jones is they recede so far into the fantasy world that gets built up around them that they start to believe basically anything. She probably truly believes that she was snow white and only unknowingly took PE drugs.

We just don't hear them come out and say yes I cheated and I did it for this <insert reason> reason.

Doc's response nailed this issue because I'm also I'm starting to doubt every quality result these athletes perform.

I think Martin Vinnacombe fessed up that he had taken drugs to get over a knee injury and tried to justify it by saying that he thought all the good cyclists had taken them but we just don't get enough of these athletes coming clean.

One guy who got caught and fessed up was Justin Charles.

Said his hip injury would have ruined his career and steroids was his only chance of getting over it, so he went for it.

His career was over otherwise anyway.

From memory he won back a lot of fans by fessing up and putting everything on record as well. It was, more than anything, a refreshing change to see someone who had cheated and been caught, tell the whole story and basically throw themselves at the mercy of public opinion.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the American Olympic team in 2000 won a court order against the Sydney Organising Committee insisting on getting the list of substances that were going to be tested for during the Olympics (apparently it's not practical to test for every banned substance).

The only possible reason for wanting this list is so you can use the prohibited substances that weren't on it.

I think its more a matter of the IOC and WADA constantly finding new substances to actually test for, rather than not testing for everything. The Yanks might have found something that wasn't yet on the banned list.

The drug Jones took was previously undetectable, she never tested positive during a race season, henceforth she possibly took the drug for the majority of her career.

It makes me sick to the stomach you watch this unbelievable athlete Have a wonderfull meet and she is a cheat. Oprah should not be parading this woman around as an African American woman to emulate she is nothing but a dirty rotten low down cheat.
