    Questioning the selectors

I was reading an article on Cricinfo about that Hayden should either retire now or the selectors needed to be brave and move him on.

This statement about the selectors summed it up very well

" Does the new group of selectors under Andrew Hilditch have the same clinical approach as the panel did when Trevor Hohns was in charge? They should remember that when Healy was nudged aside, his replacement Adam Gilchrist won over the Brisbane crowd by the end of his first match. Fans and team-mates move on"

The following was added as well

Symonds carried a knee problem into the Boxing Day Test and was tentative in the field and unable to bowl medium-pace. His scores of 27 and 0 will increase the calls for Shane Watson to replace him. If both a hobbling Symonds and his great mate Hayden play in Sydney it will be a poor reflection on the selectors. Opportunities for risk-free change don't come often in Australian cricket. This chance cannot be let to slip.

Questioning the coach too(Tim Nielsen). How did he get a 2 year extension?

      Re: Questioning the selectors

I was having a chat to my dad just a few minutes ago about the selectors.

We both thought that Hilditch and co. need to show some ghoulies and make a firm stand to the direction the team is heading. From the outside it looks like Ponting is sticking fat with his mates (Hayden & Symonds) and the selectors are backing this decision which we are seeing is being detrimental to the teams' performances.

It seems Ponting is under fire from all parts yet there is no heat on the selectors whose only role is to pick the best team for each particular game, a role they aren't fulfilling at present.

In term of selection, they seem to blamed the bowlers only again and no change with the key batsman.

          How?

The 2 players leaving the squad are due to injuries.

            Re: Questioning the selectors

Shows a distinct lack of leadership to me. The only saving grace for the selectors may be because it is a dead rubber, they have allowed Hayden to play if he decides to retire? If that is not the case, than it is mind boggling.

            Good for A-Mac though.

Baffling isn't it. We need to get a hard bastard back to whip them into shape.

So would there have been no changes if Lee & Symonds were fit?
if they were serious about it, Hayden should have gone as well. It hardly sends a message to the batsman to smarten up.

I agree with ES, only bowlers have been brought in and out of the team this summer. Batsmen have not been held accountable. It either is a boys club or they do not rate the players playing in the Shield Comp.

I THINK GEOFF LAWSON needs to be chairman of selectors. Not afraid to speak his mind, has a good cricket brain. And most of will make the hard decisions.

                        Re: Questioning the selectors

Just heard Hilditch on SEN talking ABSOLUTE BULL.

He said that if Brett Lee was fit we would have won the series. This guy has his head in the sand and is a complete embarassment to listen to as chairman of selectors. So if Brett Lee was fit Hayden failing every single time he's gone out to bat and Symonds bowling 10 overs a match of half-track pies and scoring 11 runs as the designated all-rounder is acceptable?

I was baffled before today but after listening to him I'm no longer baffled, just mad. Embarrassed and mad. He's more concerned with being liked by the 'boys' club' than in doing his BLOODY JOB.

                          Re: Questioning the selectors

Did I hear that Symonds has now withdrawn from the Sydney test because of injury as well which make it obvious that the selectors knew they had problems with at least Lee and Symonds before the start of the game Boxing day test.

Looks like McDonald will make his debut and we will go into the game with 3 pace bowlers, one spinner and the McDonald medium pace.

                            Re: Questioning the selectors

How can Lee's injury be the only factor in losing the series? So each batsman throwing away their wicket, two of the top 6 batsmen averaging 2, the all-rounder neither bowling nor batting for very long etc etc. has nothing to do with losing?

And Symonds and Lee's injuries were obviously known about, so you can't very well play them and then blame them breaking down as the reason for losing. Surely picking fit players is a non-negotiable.

And just heard Hilditch go on to defend Hayden's selection because he's 'practicing' very well in the nets. S**T! He's being picked on his nets form!!!

                            DEBACLE.

                              Re: Questioning the selectors

Is the situation with Hayden and Symonds more related to the rumoured 'what Ricky wants, Ricky gets' selection policy than anything else?

I am confused by many of the selection decisions recently - and proposing to play McDonald at number 6 is not helping me understand the direction - but when you think that guys such as Rogers dont even have ACB contracts it really does make you wonder...what is the long term plan. If you assume McDonald and one of Hilfenhaus/Bollinger plays that will mean 21 players in the last 13 tests...I just don't know what is going on.

Hilfenhaus/Bollinger is a classic example in fact...why bring Hilfenaus in to the squad for Melbourne and then add Bollinger as well for Sydney? Is Hilfenhaus the decision or is it 50cents each way? Or what is it?
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.
