    Man City

What is wrong with this underachieving team? They never really challenge for anything and last night they got thrashed by Nottingham Forrest. Even with 100M to spend during the transfer period are they ever likely to be anything else but middle of the road?

Depends on which players they buy & who is their manager. I'm sure if they continue as is then Sparky Hughes will be axed, such is the cut & thrust nature of the EPL.

The thing about City is that they are a small team, completely overshadowed by Man U and regarless of the money that their owners throw at them hey will continue to be a small team.

I also think that Hughes is a good manager of drafting teams on small budgets who are expected to compete without winning anything. I think that he will be axed and look for a return of the Special One.

They are hilarious to watch at the moment. Their problem is fairly simple though, a shocking defense.

Well they got Wayne Bridge and were to busy celebrating that to worry about the game and got smacked.

Pretty sure Robinho doesn't want to be there - he might get moved on over Summer, and is apparently a bit of a disruptive influence in the squad.

You can shell out all you want for stars, but if the squad doesn't gel, it'll hurt. Look at Chelsea's turn around since Guus has managed to get them to get along!

Can you imagine Sir Alex and the Special One in the same town? Brilliant.

This thread is over 2 months old now but they have been doing very well since.

As much as the City supporters will hate it the Bellamy signing for them was very good. Think they are in 8th now and will be pushing for the final UEFA Cup spot.

Will definitely challenge for top 4 next season with Arsenal sturggling. Can't imagine Hughes lasting much longer.

                      Re: Man City

Very interesting one isn't it. Definitely an under-acheiving 'big club' (in terms of supporter base), but same can be said of Everton, Spurs, Leeds, Sheff Wed, Newcastle.

Difference is of course now they have a near-bottomless pot of gold.

Reputation is a difficult thing to overcome, but they don't really need a Kaka or Villa or Buffon at the moment, which will just give the side a lopsided feel. Instead, going after top class players just below the international icon status that will blend into the squad, like Diego from Weder Bremen, Klose from Bayern, Riquelme, Marcelo from Real Madrid etc. a couple of Lyon players (not Benzema), and good squad players like a couple of Aussies (Scott McDonald or a certain Harry Kewell) and good superstar veterans like Lyon's Juninho, a Figo, Saldalgo, Zanetti or Cannavaro (that their clubs are trying to offload) will create a base that they can challenge from and create a solid international reputation that they can then go to someone like Kaka or Villa with - certainly more so than offering them Craig Bellamy and Stephen Ireland as teammates (good players both, but perception is everything here...)

Thing about City is, they might have a lot of money, but no one will want to play for them.

I honestly can't see it happening.

Players won't go there, especially world class players. There is no guarantee of Champions League football, that's why Kaka said no.

Well they have RObinho for another few months at least. They need to be buying the tier below that and the 21 y.o's that are going to be World Class.

Those types will sign for them.
