Bouzanis wins bumper new Liverpool contract

Liverpool goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis is set to be offered a new five-year contract.

The deal will be worth over £10,000-a-week, says the News of the World.

The 17-year-old Australian has earned rave reviews after breaking into the club’s reserve side and starring in the FA Youth Cup.

Kop boss Rafa Benitez sees Bouzanis as a potential successor to Pepe Reina.

You don't play 17yo keepers at international level. He has a long way to go before he should be considered, like get a game for Liverpool.

I'd just hate to loose him is all. Maybe if we played like, Madagascar in a friendly or something he could play?

No need. He is a long way off yet and he may not even make it.

If his heart isn't in it then he can f off. Australian sporting reputation is built on people doing all for their country and performing at 100%.

Easy fix if he does and others that have done it, make all football(soccer) training/education he has done with the AIS or state equilivent a loan and if he leaves Australia call it in the debt. Otherwise revoke his Australian passport/citzenship so if wants to come 'home' then treat him like any immigrant/visitor.

I've always wondered why we haven't done this anyway, especially for sports where the elite make a gazillion dollars a year.

Even if they only have to cough up a few % of their salaries until either their debt is paid off or until they give the sport away.

There have been a few too. I know Didaluca, Simunic and Seric all were born in Australia but played for Croatia. The last 2 of those attended the AIS on Australian tax funded player scholarships. Didaluca (keeper) I believe was on the bench a few times in an Australian squad but never capped(idiot Farina played others instead).
I would have given them Kalac for free.

Recently Sasa Odgenowski choose Macedonian over Australia despite being born here and living here almost 30 years.

                That's not true.

Pim Verbeek didn't select him in the qualifier against Indonesia because Pim didn't want to end forever Sasa's opportunity of being selected for Macedonia (remote in any case) over a single match, since it doesn't seem as if Sasa will have a long Australian career anyway. Pim was just keeping Sasa's options open for him.

Why do I have the sense that some 'Australians' here think that they are somehow more Australian than others because they don't have a passport? Redneck mindset. We live in a global village now, and I'm sure Sasa's paid his share to collective society that goes far beyond kicking a football around in a place that didn't even give a crap about the sport until a few years ago when Aloisi scored a penalty.

Last I checked Australia allowed dual citizenships, and loyalty and national pride wasn't measured by bigotry, so please stick your racist nationalism up you-know-where.

ps. The thing that kills me is that we only demand loyalty from those who are any good while it is so easy to discard those who aren't as good -- ES, your own post suggesting we could just throw Kalac away because he's not a good 'keeper illustrates my point perfectly. How can we demand loyalty from those we would just as soon discard when it no longer suits our purposes?

Good point -- exactly the same point was brought up recently in the case of M. Clarke who was asking for more money, wasn't it?

Someone should look into this. We spend so much on sport as it is -- some sort of HECS system should exist.

Sorry to ask have you got any proof, cos I haven't seen anything written yet that suggests he wasn't picked by Pim. Also at 29yo there was some chance he would represent Australia long term, he is better than others in the that squad. Macedonia rate him its not a remote chance.

??? Not sure going on about there.
Fine about Sasa, if he doesn't want to represent the country he was born and lived for almost 30 years then maybe he should go elsewhere.

F off. Its got nothing to to with racist nationalism.
I have dual passports, but I consider myself Australian first cos I was born here and lived most of my life here. I don't understand how someone in that sort of situation can say that Australia isn't their first nationality.

BTW the Kalac line was a joke.
Anyway so your point is the FFA and Australian taxpayers can't demand loyality to players that they paid for and trained but the individual can sell his loyality to anyone that gives them a game.

                      Verbeek explains his choices
                      19 January 2009 | 14:23 - SBS: Philip Micallef

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek said the reason he did not pick Adelaide hard man Sasa Ognenovski in his squad for the 2011 Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia was to protect his international ambitions.

Ognenovski, who is one of the mainstays behind Adelaide United's bid for the A-League title, was one of several high-profile omissions from the Dutchman’s squad for the match in Jakarta on January 28.

But while his defensive club-mates Eugene Galekovic, Robert Cornthwaite and Scott Jamieson were picked, Ognenovski was surprisingly left out.

“He is not that young anymore,” Verbeek said, when asked why the 29-year-old defender who has a Macedonian background was overlooked.

“The chance of him being a Socceroos player at the World Cup is not that big so I prefer to take players with possibilities.

“I’ve also read that Macedonia is top of his list so I think it is good for him to focus on that country.”

Verbeek said he did not wish to deprive the tough defender of a chance to earn a belated international career.

“Ognenovski can still play for Macedonia,” Verbeek explained.

“Why should I block his future by having him play one game in Indonesia and then he can never play again for another country in international football?”

FIFA rules stipulate that once you play for one country at senior level you cannot play for another.

Verbeek said the lack of serious preparation for the match in Jakarta had forced him to pick blocks of players, who were likely to do the job for him because of their understanding at club level.

Hence the selection of Melbourne Victory strike partners Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp and their Central Coast Mariners counterparts Dylan Macallister and Matt Simon as the four strikers in a 21-member squad.

The coach suggested that he will pick either a ‘Victory’ or ‘Mariners’ strike force for the match at the huge Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, which can hold 88,000.

“These four are the best strikers I’ve got,” he declared.

“But because we will have no preparation for the game it is best to pick the players who are used to playing alongside each other. We have to find out which is the better combination.

“It was interesting to see last Friday’s match at Telstra Dome that featured all four players.”

Since Melbourne crushed the Mariners 3-0 with Thompson and Allsopp both scoring and playing well, they will be widely expected to start in Jakarta.

Verbeek said he could not afford to pick Perth Glory flier Nikita Rukavytsya, who is trialling in the Netherlands with FC Twente.

“I would have picked Rukavytsya but you never know what’s going to happen with him in Holland,” Verbeek said. “So he is on standby.”

Verbeek is suspended for the match as he will be serving the first of a three-match ban after being sent off as Korea Republic coach in the match for third place against Japan at the 2007 Asian Cup.

Verbeek will be sitting in the stands while Graham Arnold will be on the bench alongside assistant Henk Duut. "Arnie will be responsible," Verbeek said. "He will make the final decisions."

The squad contains six players from Melbourne and only two - Craig Moore and Thompson - with any significant Socceroos experience.

                      SOCCEROOS SQUAD:

Danny Allsopp (Melbourne), Billy Celeski (Melbourne), Shannon Cole (Sydney), Robert Cornthwaite (Adelaide), Tarek Elrich (Newcastle), Eugene Galekovic (Adelaide), Dean Heffernan (Central Coast), Scott Jamieson (Adelaide), Dylan Macallister (Central Coast), Matthew McKay (Queensland), Craig Moore (Queensland), Tom Pondeljak (Melbourne), Paul Reid (Adelaide), Matt Simon (Central Coast), Michael Theoklitos (Melbourne), Archie Thompson (Melbourne), Matthew Thompson (Newcastle), Nikolai Topor-Stanley (Perth), Rodrigo Vargas (Melbourne), Danny Vukovic (Central Coast), Michael Zullo (Queensland).

To me it just confirms Pim isn't a great coach. How he rule out one of the best A-league defenders even if he is 29 is stupid?
He has duds like Cornthwaite and Topor-Stanley in the squad who are terrible.

If he were a cricketer and he was included in the national squad there would have been a riot.
