My theory is its makes it hard to select a quality spinner like McGain when your keeper doesn't have a clue how to keep to one.
Why does the keeper have to be an excellent bat? No one ever is going to be as good as Gilly.

Haddin is the best option at this stage. His keeping is passable (frustrating as **** though) and he has the counter attacking batting that is needed in his position. With the conservative North at 6 Haddin is crucial with the bat. He can turn momentum and really get you out of a jam. Sometimes when your under the pump at say 5 for 120 the last thing you want is to get bogged down. When he batted poorly in India that is where we struggled.

He is not the perfect option but I have not seen a better one at this stage.

A wood chopper doesn't have a poofy nickname like 'Sidsy'.
Thats what the other players call him. I am sticking with Sidsy Seriously maybe something like Axe is the go? Chopper?

Clarke probably started it. (Just another reason to not like him)

Paine is probably the closest but he isn't a brilliant glove man either. Hartley has great glove work but would be no better than a number 8 at the test level.
I would look at Paine, also Victoria has a couple of not bad keepers.

Would Paine or Wade be any better as keepers? I've not seen them keep really and it's not something i take notice of.

They're definitely not better batsmen even though their batting skill is part of their appeal.

I too have not seen a lot of Wade, however I have been told that his footwork and glove work is quite good and better than Haddin. Obviously his batting may not be at the same level of Haddin's but coming off back to back hundred's in First Class Cricket (albeit on flat tracks) there must be something there to work with.
