    Victory sign Carlos Hernandez

Costa Rica ace Carlos Hernandez signs on with Melbourne Victory

A-League champions Melbourne Victory have signed Costa Rica midfielder Carlos Hernandez to a new three-year deal, and have also secured a Thai international defender.

Hernandez, who has been with the Victory for the past two years on loan, was made an official Victory player on Thursday.

The club has paid an undisclosed transfer fee to Costa Rican club LD Alajuelense to secure him until the end of the 2011/12 season.

The 26-year-old midfielder was an integral part of the Victory's charge to the A-League championship last season.

Joining him at the club will be Thailand international defender Surat Sukha, who has joined for two years - also for an undisclosed fee.

Sukha, 26, is a left-sided defender and has been signed from Thai club Chonburi FC.

Great for Victory not to lose him like (dare i say it) Fred.

Any idea what this Thai defender will add to the squad?

A League clubs can have 5 foreigners on their books, but when it comes to the Asian Championships its 3. Those 3 need to be named in February.

Next year there is a change to that where you can add a 4th foreigner, as long as he's a member of the Asian Confederation, which is where the new Thai defenders signing adds value.

Hmm. Makes a lot of sense, until you realise that none of our back four are foreigners, so would all be eligible for the Champions League anyway...

Not that I'm against the signing, mind you. Very good for South East Asian soccer to get their top players into the A-League.

Also sounds like he is a left sided player which is always a hard to find.

I remember seeing that player in the Asian Champions league. I actually thought he looked quite the player, and can remember the commentators, particularly Andy Harper, going on about how this player should be brought tot he A -league and so forth. Seemed to me to be a bit like Evan Berger, with perhaps a little mre poise

Ooooh. Good, classy left sided players ARE hard to find and has been the one area Victory has been found lacking when playing in Asia. Will look forward to seeing his progress.
