    Socceroos smash Irish

    CAHILL SCOURGE OF REPUBLIC

    Ireland 0
    Australia 3 (Cahill 38,44, Carney 90)

Australia midfielder Tim Cahill struck twice in seven first-half minutes to inflict just a second defeat on the Republic of Ireland under Giovanni Trapattoni in Limerick.

The Republic have been revived since Trappatoni took charge 15 months ago but the Italian would have been unhappy with his side's display less than a month before their key World Cup qualifier in Cyprus on September 5.

The hosts lacked the required cutting edge to break down a side who have already booked their ticket to the final, and were given a lesson in finishing by Cahill who clinically finished after 38 and 44 minutes to settle the game.

David Carney put the icing on a impressive Socceroos display when he fired in a scorching 30-yard drive in stoppage-time.

To be thrashed at home then Ireland must be rubbish. Maybe Trap is way to past it. He was touted as an Arnold replacemnet but Pim got the job.
The first goal is a ripper, in terms of the build up. 2 v 6. Carney's more a fluke.

They didn't actually play too badly (Ireland), I thought! It was just one of those games where our shots crept in/their shots hit the post.

And they can't be all that crap if they were leading Italy in their qualifying group.

Perhaps some credit is due the 'Roos, although I've always said that we're a chance against anyone with Timmy Cahill playing.. I've seen him single-handedly rip games/teams apart at every level for the last ten years, even half-fit, with irresistable ten-minute cameos, enough times to know that he can decide a match on his own.

The key word is were. Currently they are point behind and a game in front. Its an easy group, they won't win it but should get second for a playoff spot.

How good is Timmy .... absolutely sensational. He has re-invented "right place, right time".

Need jackie Charlton back as manager. Haven't been any good since the mid 90's,Tony Cascarino,Niall Quinn and any footballer of any irish heritage.

Trapatoni has them within reach of the World Cup finals.

Including a 1-1 draw against the World Cup Winners Italy on Italian soil.
