    Mills cracks NBA contract

Patty Mills signs NBA contract with Portland Trailblazers
    October 18, 2009

Australia point guard Patty Mills has finally signed a contract with NBA side Portland Trailblazers, ending a turbulent few months for the talented youngster.

The news brings an end to months of uncertainty for the 21-year-old, who as a second-round draft pick, was not guaranteed an NBA contract.

This was further complicated when he broke his foot in the opening practice session of the pre-season in July.

Portland selected Mills with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the NBA Draft in April after playing two seasons at St Mary's College in California.

Details of Mills' deal with the Trailblazers were not disclosed by the franchise

So can you be drafted and not offered a contract? How does that work?
More of an In Bruges guy?

Only first round draft picks, have guaranteed contracts.

The good news though is that NBA contracts - unlike NFL ones - are guaranteed. I am sure the contract isn't massive however it points strongly to him making the roster which is a good achievement.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

The contract shouldn't be massive, but great news considering the guy is still injured and prob wont even train properly for several weeks! They must see potential to sign an injured player?

He will be traded out anyway, only reason Portland have given the contract in my opinion.

By being drafted, a team obtains the "rights" to that player, rather than the actual player themselves. This means that they have first crack at signing them, and if they do not want to do this, they can either trade the players rights to another team, or let them play somewhere else (i.e: Europe), to let them develop and then sign them to their roster later on.
