For those with a greater knowledge than myself, can you please clarify something for me?

Why does one league have designated hitters who bat in place of the pitchers & the other league have the pitchers bat?

    Often wondered why its so.

Also, do they take it in turns, so that one league potentially hosts 4 games in the World Series, then the next year the other league has that right?

I'm not 100% on the first but the national league is the "senior" league and continues to have the pitcher bat. The American League turned to the DH in the early 70's basically because most pitchers suck at hitting. Like fast bowlers.

Currently the home advantage in the world series is maintained by the league that wins the All-Star game. It's not the greatest system, especially as the American League has won the All-Star game for about the last 11 years staright

Get a little annoyed at people who don't know the reason behind the World Series getting its name & then assuming its the Yanks thinking they're the best in the world at everything. You sound like a fool writing that crap.

Big suprise the yankees won, could of picked that before the season got underway when they picked up CC, Mark Teixeira & AJ as free agents. Have to feel for the rays who have the talent but can't match the spending of the yankees & red sox.

Love the baseball myself and follow it everyday on the net. Love the addition of oneHD and finally getting the chance to see my beloved tigers on free to air television.

I heard that the world newspaper or magazine started sponsoring baseballs championship series in the early 1900's and the championship series was then called the World Series. The sponsorship lasted decades and when the world newspaper ended their sponsorship the name stuck.

Having said that i haven't actually researched it to find out if its 100% true and being a baseball fan i probably should have but can't be bothered.

That is the story that is told every year and I have no reason not to believe it.

But please tell me one other competion in the world that still names it's competition after a sponser who hasn't sponsered the competition for 100 years.

                I think it's a cop out.

                  That story is true.
The name of every trophy has to have an origin.
Cop out or not, they will never change the name of such an iconic event.

The Stanley Cup used to be sponsored by a knife company apparently.

Dr McLelland used to sell footy socks too I think

Why does the comp have to change the name of it's finals series just because no other sports have the same deal? I don't get that..."oh they don't do it this way or that way" so that makes it wrong? I believe THAT is a cop out.

The one thing that i like with Baseball, is the tradition they seem to carry through, and they are as big on that as any sport.

The fact that the sport can stay relevant and not have to change with the times is brilliant for mine, alot of sports having to move with the times, not just with names but rule changes etc etc.

Because if you believe the story, the finals series was named after a sponsor. When that sponsor stopped sponsoring the finals, I would have thought that the naming of that series would also stop. But conveniently that sponsorship meant that it was called the World Series and that suited the Americans just nicely.

Didn't you know the Dream Team was sponsored by a pillow company?

It's a nice story but really they love it being called the World series. The NBA calls their champs the World champions and there was no such sponsorship agreement.

At the end of the day though who can really argue that it is the World championship. Someone before mentioned where was the team from Australia? Sorry mate we don't play professional baseball here.

Cuba and the rest of them play but all their best players are dying to go to the US and play in the World Series.

Aaaah, remember the good old days of the Waverley Reds & the Melbourne Monarchs? I used to love going out to VFL Park & watching the Reds play. Something to do in the footy off season.

Australian Baseball League To Debut In 2010

America’s Major League Baseball is big backer of bold plans to have a new Australian national league up and running by November 2010.

Ten years after the old Australian Baseball League folded, the Australian Baseball Federation and MLB have begun the groundwork for a new national competition which will have the Claxton Shield as its prize.
