As has been stated a diuretic gives no advantage to sportsmen on the field. They can be bought over the counter and the function they perform is "promotes the formation of urine by the kidney"

It's banned because it can be used to mask drug taking. But I doubt leg spinning's an art that would benefit from any performance enhancing drug.

Warne didn't get suspended for being a drug cheat. He got suspended for taking a tablet(s) that was on the banned list that could potentially mask drug taking.
He was not found guilty of taking a performance enhancing drug. I think his penalty would have been more severe.

Sorry it's banned cos it's a masking agent for performance enhancing drugs. Should be just the same penalty as the likihood he is taking it to hide perf. enh. stuff increases.

That's exactly why it is banned.

So was Warnie taking it to mask his drug taking?

We'll never know.

But it is the same reason that someone who refuses to take a drug test is dealt in the same way as someone who takes the test and is found to have been on drugs.

As an "old Bowler" Afridi is right..we all do it, only difference is some get caught!! Sunscreen off the arm finds it's way onto a ball in most games!!

We're going a little off topic, but Warnie dislocated his bowling shoulder about 8 weeks before the start of the 2003 World Cup in Sth Africa (which was going to be his swansong World Cup campaign). And we all know that the use of steroids is one of the most efficient ways to fast-track recovery from injury (the same reason Justin Charles took them incidentally). Nobody will ever know if Warne took steroids to fast-track his recovery from a disclocated shoulder, and subsequently took a diuretic to mask their presence, but it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that this might have happened. Taking a steroid masking agent (also known as a 'fluid tablet' in less sinister tones) from your Mum's prescription medication for vanity purposes sounds far more implausible but seems to have been accepted as gospel. We'll never know the full, unedited truth.

Probably. The Paki's and Bottle tops have been mentioned. Lollies and Ashes. I think there was a England captain that rubbed dirt all over the ball.

I think there has been as bad or worse but the TV technology wasn't around.

I think people have to remember that the reason Afridi was handed a 2 match ban was because of his admition to ball tampering, similar to the AFL's tribunal the penalty is reduced.
