Victorian bowler Dirk Nannes calls it a day

FAST bowler Dirk Nannes yesterday became the second Victorian star to retire from first class cricket this season.

Just four weeks away from the the Bushrangers possibly playing in a second successive Sheffield Shield final, the 33-year-old Nannes has joined batsman Brad Hodge in calling it quits from the longer form of the game.

      Which players?

Hodge has played SS cricket for the Vics for the best part of 15 years... At some point he has to get sick of the fact that he isn't going to get another chance at the next level and decide to spend a bit more time at home.

Nannes's body can't stand up to the rigours of continuous cricket and his decsion to step down from 4-day cricket is an easy one.

He will probably be extending his career(Vics, Australia and IndiaT20) by a couple of seasons so I can see why he wants to do it(he's never going to play tests for Australia anyway).

IMO, both of these guys put a financial windfall ahead of completing their commitments. If the IPL was starting a few weeks later Nannes would have been available for the Vics.

I'd be disappointed if Nannes was a young emerging player, but at 33 he is in that twilight zone for fast bowlers where they are more susceptible to injuries. Statistically there aren't that many fast bowlers who are able to sustain their careers beyond their early 30's.
In some respects, perhaps the shortest form of the game is the perfect vehicle for pace bowlers to prolong their shelf life in the game?

If however we start seeing players in their mid to late 20's making this sort of decision, then that would become a real issue.
Could we one day see blokes who, hit say 27, and have not been able to get into the Test team, make this sort of decision? If so this would test the depth of talent in Shield cricket ranks not too mention potentially reducing the quality of our 1st class cricket in general.

Nannes has only played 1 Shield game this summer, so there are more deserving bowlers for the Vics if we make the final(like the ones who have done all the work this summer).

T20 is slowly taking over the cricket world, which is sad.

Re: Victorian bowler Dirk Nannes calls it a day

Hodge has served his state better than anyone and at his age it was nothing unexpected to see him retire.
Playing 20/20 overseas is a great way to go into semi retirement.

Nannes is a quick bowler and at 33 the body must be feeling the long bowling spells, 4 overs in 20/20 is perfect for the age and yes the money is good, but in no way do i look at these two players as being traitors to their country or state.

Any player no matter what age, if you arent a chance to play for Australia why not take up offers elsewhere.

State cricket to me is a learning platform to play for Australia so in my opinion if players retire from tests, should not play state cricket or only one retired player in each team should be allowed to play as a captain or vice to guide the younger ones.
The more retired test players you have playing state the less players you have to bring up to test level.

English cricket I have no doubt suffers due to so many overseas and retired players playing county.

Aren't you of the opinion that State level should be used more so as development, so therefor playing younger players than selecting or bringing in older statesmen anyway?

That said, i don't begrudge anyone in the twilight's of their careers to chase some coin, players suck as Hayden, Gilly, even Warney could have easily gone around again given their late form in the IPL, so state players that never had those same opportunities, who busted a gut doing so, especially Hodge, he has bled for this state, if he wants to go & cash in, he has a young family to support, good on him i say.

It's more about making a commitment and then sticking to it and I feel if these guys didn't have other sources of income they would be.

I don't see the sense in bringing in guys like Darren Pattinson and Damien Wright because they will never play for Australia. Now that Nannes won't play shield cricket for us I wouldn't pick him in the FRC to T20 games either.

But they completely different games just like Test's, ODI's and T20's are.

Definitely agree and judging by the crowds this summer, T20 is just going to get bigger.

I just don't get the criticism of Nannes. It's akin to having a go at someone for leaving a job with more demands and less pay.

I am a big fan of T20 and see no problems with players identifying themselves as exclusively T20/ODI/test players.

Either way we will sure have to get used to it. The only major reason I see T20 specialists still playing Shield cricket is to keep 'warm' because there aren't enough T20/ODD games during the year.

I can see players like David Hussey, Warner, Tait, Lee, Simpson and Birt concentrating solely on T20 and one day cricket very soon. As absurd as it sounds, test/shield cricket may end up becoming a distraction to the new generation of T20 players.

Don't compare sport to the actual workers because if you are most professional companies wouldn't allow someone to pick and choose which days/hours they will work because they have decided to take some work overseas as well and they don't want the job here in Australia to effect it. Most companies would say thanks and pack up the desk on the way out.

My criticism is that he signed on for the full season with the Vics but has now decided to concentrate on protecting the financial windfall that T20 in India offers. The irony is that this pot of gold that is now available to him is largely because the Vics showcased his talents. He's also chosen to play T20 cricket instead of Shield cricket.

I've mentioned a few times I'm against this half in half out approach that some of the guys are now taking and in the end it won't benefit Australian cricket at all.

I have no problems if he's retired from Victorian cricket full stop but he will most likely want to play the limited over cricket next season to stay sharp for the big pay days overseas.

Good luck to all the guys that are stepping down for their shield commitments but if I was a state selector I wouldn't play them in the limited forms of the game either.
