    Australian Pace Stocks

    I've been following a bit of the 20/20, and I must say, I haven't been overly impressed with our bowling stocks. Clark has been a god-send, and Lee has certainly stepped up over the last few years becoming a much more consistent bowler. Tait seems to go ok, but I have concerns over his durability, and he is a bit of a one trick pony.

    Paul Rofe was a guy who I went to school with, who I thought had a real future, possibly at the highest level. I'd really like to see him get a chance, he's very tall, and McGrath like.

    Guys like Johnson, and that other young QLD(?) bloke (forget his name), I don't rate at all. I think we might have a few tough years ahead.

    Thoughts? Can anyone see any good options on the horizon?
    Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

    I think Johnson will be a beauty when he grows up a bit. His has improved by miles over the last two summers.

    Ben Hilfenhaus is the best swing bowler we've had since Alderman.

    Clark = line & length
    Lee & Tait = pace
    Johnson = variation
    Hilfenhaus = swing

    I'm much more worried about our batting.

      They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

        I must try and get a closer look at him. To this stage I hadn't been that impressed, but mind you I've only seen limited amounts of his bowling.

          Cast your mind back to the Twenty20 international around christmas time last year. Remembering that Twenty20 is all about the batsmen hitting sixes and that bowlers are just a neccessary evil in this form of cricket. Hilfenhaus's performance was amazing. He was bending the ball all over the place and picked up 3 for.

            From memory there is a couple of guys from WA that bowl quick and straight.

            I think we have enough options in the pace bowling department at the moment but we are lacking in spinners and wicketkeepers.

              There are a couple of good young spinners down here, who if they have a good start to the season could come into contention. I doubt we'll get someone as dominant as Warne though, for a long time.

                I'd be stunned if I ever saw anyone as good as Warne in my life time in all the aspects that a spinner requires

                  I doubt I'll ever see anyone as good at picking up stray blondes in my lifetime, either.

                      Re: Australian Pace Stocks

                      Wouldn't be placing too much judgement on our bowlers from the 20/20 world cup as it is a horrible version of the game for bowlers. I am not as worried about our stocks as I was. I think we can build a pretty good attack but perhaps our depth if we lose one or two guys might be tested. We might have pick sides with a slightly different structure from now on as well without Warne.

                      Hilfenhaus finally gives us a guy who can genuinely swing it both ways and he also bowls at a good speed. I hope they can give him some games this summer.

                      Johnson is a guy who the selectors have followed since he was a very young guy and he has all the raw tools to make it. Really needs to develop the ability to swing the ball atleast occasionally before he can hold a spot in our side though. A little predictable at the moment and left armers really need that ability to bring the ball back into the right hander.

                      Clark has just been brilliant and should spear head the attack with Pidge now gone. Moves the ball a touch in the air and off the deck so you would never really feel comfotable against him. Looks like he gets on you a bit quicker than you expect as well probably due to his fairly low action. Bowls an awkward length and even when its a placid pitch gets guys caught in the infield through mis hits. Basically the all conditions bowler you need to build an attack around.

                      Lee can continue being an impact bowler rather than a work horse because of the emergence of Clark. Swings it early which means he is always in with a chance with the new pill and then can come on in short bursts with the old bowl to either try and get a bit of reverse or to give someone a barrage of bouncers. Dont rate him all that highly but he performs a valuable role.

                      Tait I see really as cover for Lee especially if we play Stuey McGill as our spinner. Having Tait, Lee and Stuey in the same side would make it difficult to restrict the oppositions scoring. All are impact bowlers who cough up alot runs. Also I have a theory with young bowlers that they tend to go better once they get a reputation and the opposition fears them a little. Not sure Tait has that yet and for the style of bowler he is we dont really want quality players going out to target him.
