    Vics 5/204

    Quiney 66
    Wade 51

I thought Quiney couldn't bat and shouldn't have been selected but he's certainly had a good game with 62 no in the first dig.

    Good recovery from 5/95

    Win from any position

Luke Butterworth with 8 wickets for the match so far is a surprise.
Doherty not doing as well with the ball in this innings.

Doherty should be doing well on a 4th day pitch. Maybe he is just suited to the shorter versions?

For whatever reason I heard Shaun Graf say that the drop in wickets don't help the spinners on the 4th day. McGain didn't do a lot in the match as well.

Tassie win. Quiney got a century but the tail didn't wag.

                Not the tails fault.

                We were 5-153 & 5-88.

In 2 hits our top 5's highest score was 41.... You ain't going to win too many games with numbers like this.

Was there a reason given why White didn't play?

Not sure if anything official but I know the ACB made Ferguson sit out so i suspect it would be the same thing.

Ferguson and Marsh made 100s at Adelaide. Test players Hussey and North made a combined ten runs. Looking good for the Ashes.

Hilditch mentioned in the press that both players are under to pressure to keep their spots for the 1st test... Liar.

They talk tough but we all know they are reluctant to make changes.

Hopefully Greg Chappell can change the trend.

But why? I just don't get it -- I understand not wanting to change a winning team, but refusing against all reason to change a LOSING team? Makes little sense.

That's the million dollar question and I don't have an answer.
I think it's great that the selectors reward older guys like North with a call up but when it doesn't work there should be no shame in going to one of the next batch of guys.

Hussey was a great selection as well but it has now run the course.

I think so too -- but surely the whole point of picking mature guys is the knowledge that they'll give you solid consistent service for a couple of years, but no longer -- so you have a whole pipeline of mature guys ready to go when someone loses form? It's a great selection policy, but we've missed the whole point of choosing an older guy, by leaving them in there until way, way past their use-by date while other older guys bang runs out but can't get in.

You can understand with a younger player wanting to give them continuity to learn and grow, but with the older selections, it has to be plug-and-play. Any of a group of 6 or 7 players in the Sheffield Shield could have come in and done a better job than North in the last 12 months -- why couldn't we get that group of guys (including North) in a room and say to them that they will be picked strictly on form, so if D.Huss is the next cab off the rank and comes in and plays three games great but then starts falling off, and North is going great guns again in domestic cricket, he goes straight back in -- we just put the guy who is in the best form in for the upcoming test series -- ie. pick players on form, not on 'loyalty' or some such nonsense (revolutionary, I know). It's an especially great system for a team going through a rebuilding patch -- forget stability, that's a downward slope anyway, you may as well go for some consistency from your no.6 spot by picking some guaranteed runs to prop up the inconsistency of your younger, more mercurial players. I don't know why 'stability' is that important for the no.5 in the world test side anyway -- surely performance outweighs stability when your ranking is going down the toilet.

I think the selectors have surrounded the Baggy Green with such mysticism that it seems that once they deem someone worthy of it they elevate that player beyond the measure of mere mortals, so North with a Baggy Green and no runs is still a better prospect than White with no Baggy Green and a thousand runs.

                                Re: 2010 / 2011 Sheffield Shield

I think the selectors made the right decision in selecting North and his ability to get centuries proves it wasn't a bad decision but the consistency just isn't there and he needs to be moved aside. One of the things that I think complicates things with him being demoted is that he isn't a bad spin bowler and the selectors are mindful that Hauritz needs some support.
Having said that I don't think it should be a compelling reason.

Its time for either North and/or Hussey to make way for others.

I think Cameron White is now a great cricketer and capable of becoming a strong number six.
I would have no problems with Khawaja either and ideally they could both come in.
Not sold on Ferguson just yet but he wouldn't be a bad selection. Definitely not sold on Smith yet.

We do have some good cricketers performing well at the Shield cricket level and if the selectors are bold enough I think they could answer the challenge.
