Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel (NSP) today announced a 17-man squad for the upcoming Vodafone Ashes Series against England with the first Test beginning on 25 November in Brisbane.

The 17 man squad is:

They've named a bigger squad than they do for an Ashes series in England.

Paine should be there for Haddin and McDonald for Hussey.

Fair enough having such a big squad considering the Ashes don't start for a while yet. Hopefully(but unlikely) the team gets picked on form.

I keep reading and re-reading the list and I must need new contacts because, try as I might, I just can't seem to find Cam White's name on the list, even though he is Australia A captain, a mature and creative leader, and one might reasonably assume, the next cab off the rank as a batsman or a batting/bowling all-rounder. I can't imagine why he hasn't been picked, as neither of Ponting or Clarke have ever shown an insecurity about their leadership of the team being threatened...

Any danger they could actually make a decision?

Khawaja getting in ahead of Cam White and Andrew McDonald is farcical.
Since when does our test team get picked like an AFL draft on potential rather than performance?

It starts in 10 days.

It just shows what a joke our selectors are. They can't make a decision. If they don't know who's going to be in the team, then don't name a squad.

We are playing in Australia, we do we need to name such a large squad.

Just name the 12 or 13, 7 days out from the game.

Don't agree, Khawaja is easily the next cab off the rank for me and he's in there on performance not potential(averaging 53). White should be ahead of Ferguson though.

Mike Hussey put up better numbers for 10 seasons before he was picked.
Brad Hodge & Darren Lehmann the same.
If he didn't wear a pale blue cap no-one would have heard of him.

Where is David Hussey? Leigh Carseldine? George Bailey?

This. The squad is all over the shop. The selelctors have balls it up. There's no balance between playing styles and maturity and promising players. Like others I wonder why Cam White isnt there.


God all mighty this is going to be a long summer. I remember this feeling from the mid '80s, it's like a bad dream.

Carseldine averages 35(plus he's 35)

How are they better performers?

Plus it wouldn't matter what cap Khawaja wears, he is a serious talent and the heir apparent to the number 3 in the Aussie side IMO. He would be in the squad no matter where he's from.

Hussey, Hodge and Lehmann had to have long apprenticeships because of batsmen like the Waughs, Ponting, Martyn, Hayden, Langer, Taylor etc being in front of them. We don't have that luxury anymore.

Yep, we can bank a solid 15-20 runs every innings from that pair.

It will take a loss or two before someone in form displaces either of them.
