Police scared off Melbourne Victory matches

What do you say Victory / soccer fans. Media beat up? or scourge of the sporting world. Seems Muscat is not the only one on the angry pills.

Victoria Police have confirmed that some officers are asking not to work at soccer matches as officials grapple with the issue of crowd violence and loutish behaviour.

Superintendent Rod Wilson said a rogue element of Melbourne Victory supporters went to matches with the intention of causing a ruckus, but stressed the violence was not ethnically related.

I say arm the police with supersoakers

This one belongs in the Other Sports section.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

Surprised it took so long to be posted.

      My opinion, media BS.

I've never had any problem watching the Victory. It's a beat up in my opinion . I once saw the Police eject a guy without any good reason. I often think that there are far too many police at the games.

I have no problem if the police remove the morons that light flares at a game.

Craig Foster came sounded very illinformed for claiming that flares are a problem at AFL games.

Look at the attempt that the H/S made last week to ambush our club by dredging up the elephant dance from 1996 and then trying to turn it into a controversy.

That shows the quality of what passes for journalism in that paper. The FFA/Melbourne Victory made a mistake by dragging out the big guns though. They should have made one comment and then left it at that.

Having said that I did enjoy Craig Foster's bizzare and amateurish ramblings on SEN this morning. KB played him like a piano and made him look a fool.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

As a regular attendee of the active area for Melbourne Victory, the article is a waste of perfectly good paper.
Simply its all caused by over policing, so in reality they create the issue that they try to avoid...

Setting off flares by morons does not help the cause.

Didn't change anything when flares were not seen for months on end.

14 flares at a single game seems a bit much but hard to know if true.
However, I would be hardly surprised if theage tries to tap into some fear of hooligans that does not exist.a beat up.

Didn't they quote the police saying officers are asking not to be assigned to soccer games?

I've never been to an A-League game yet but there always seems to be many degenerate youths in the crowd acting like maniacs so I wouldn't be surprised . Or is that just me who sees that? I'm only 20 and I'm embarrassed for some of those people. I've never seen it at a footy much.

Why do people let off flares at Soccer games? It's really stupid. Especially at an indoor stadium like Etihad. It's not good for people suffering from asthma or other respiratory problems.

I plan to go to a few Heart games next season but I wouldn't sit where all the scum go.

I have witnessed it first hand (from a safe distance)

I have never seen scenes anything remotely like you would see at a Victory/Adelaide game, at an AFL match.

I went to my one and only game against Sydney at Etihad a few seasons back. At the end of the game I went to go out the ground from our nearest exit, they told me I could not walk past where the Sydney supporters were (I did not even have any Victory colors on (I just went as a neutral supporter).
Anyway somehow the supporters of both teams managed to pull the chairs out of the stands and throw them at one another! It was pathetic to say the least.

I witnessed an all in brawl after we lost the prelim against Adelaide in 1997, i was 13 at the time.

This stuff isn't limited to just football/soccer, happens at many sporting events. Flares, i agree can be an issue at times. But as i stated above, there was a period of 18 months where not one flare was let off & yet police were still heavy handed.

The issue is a lot deeper than what the papers would like people to believe, it has been an ongoing issue for 6 years. Which is way the supporters have been constantly sitting down with the club, to work through issues, even though Vicpol would have you think it's been there initiative to hold talks.

Letting off of flares is something related to soccer. I have never seen it happen at any other event, sporting or otherwise.
