    Australia v Uruguay

Let’s start with just how the Socceroos got to the 2006 World Cup. Forget the preliminaries; the action really hotted up when we were drawn to play the 5th placed South American side over 2 legs. Who should it be, but Uruguay, the same country that had eliminated us 4 years earlier, only this time the crucial return leg was to be played on home soil in Sydney.

There was much animosity in Uruguay due to the Socceroos decision to base themselves in nearby Buenos Aries, Argentina. Uruguay then tried to have the game put back a day, which Australia flatly rejected. The game was put back 5 hours as part of a compromise, which suited Uruguay as they expected The Socceroos to miss their direct flight back to Australia. Qantas, as the Socceroos major sponsor had arranged for a plane to be available equipped with massage tables to ferry them home quickly for the second leg.

To say the Uruguayan’s were cocky was an understatement. The first leg in Montevideo saw the home side prevail 1-0.

Under the astute guidance of master Dutch tactician Guus Hiddink, the Socceroos were keen to take the game up to the Uruguayan’s in Sydney. Roared on by 83,000 fans at Telstra Stadium the Socceroos struggled to break down the stubborn Uruguayan’s. Hiddink decided after just 30 minutes to substitute Tony Popovic & brought on Harry Kewell, with immediate success as Australia scored through Marco Bresciano after a Harry Kewell miss-kick.

A goalless second half saw the match enter extra time. Goalless once more. Now it would come down to a penalty shoot out to determine the final team to qualify for the World Cup.

Now the Penalty Shoot Out that the whole country was on the edge of their seats watching. I had stayed up to watch it with my kids.

Now, rather than me go through a blow by blow description of that famous shoot out, strap yourselves in & relive it as it happened:

What were your memories of that night? Did you attend? Did you watch it on TV at home, with mates or in a pub/club?

Get it right, U r gay.

I was with a group of mates I played soccer with for years. We seen a number of qualifiers in the past both live and on TV. I rate the Aloisi penalty as my one of favourite moments in Australian sports. Even the commercials with it in put a smile on my face still.

Another favourite part was the when the Uraguayian, fouled by one of ours, goes down a screaming mess hands covering eyes. While on the ground he snuck a peak to see if the ref was still looking. Needed Kevin Muscat there to stomp on him.

I watched it at Onslaught's house with a whole bunch of BigFootyites. E-ow. I mean Woof-ites.

I don't think any of us knew much about soccer but when Aloisi put away the last penalty we all kind of got the gist of what was happening.

Don't forget Bresciano's goal, without it we'd never have made it.
Still that moment when the Aloisi penalty went in was just pure magic.
I think it's great he's in the A-League, is there any opposition supporter who could boo him after that? Not me.
          Park that car
          Drop that phone
          Sleep on the floor
          Dream about me

His brother Ross was booed by even his team's fans when at Adelaide.

flagged the morning off work (kick-off was at half 9 UK time) and met a couple of mates t the Famous 3 Kings in west kensington. From memory there were only 1 or 2 pubs in London where this was on. It was a case of first beers at 9:00am and then the tensest 2 hours of watching sport ever.

Whe Aloisi stepped up, the whole pub just went silent. Strangers all had arms around shoulders.....brothers in arms type thing.....I didn't see the Aloisi penalty go in. I knew he'd hit it well though because the whole place erupted and we wer doused in beer, cider and snakebites......stayed drinking for a couple more hours and then headed to work (still wearing the Socceroos shirt)....my boss at the time laughed b/c he'd forgotten it was on and it was only when he was speaking to a mate who had mentioned that their office was empty b/c all the aussie temps had vacated to watch the game that he realised where I was!!

The epilogue to that was pre-Xmas drinks that year (in London) at a mates place where we proceeded to torture guests for a couple of hours by replaying time and again the penalyty shoot out!

There was plenty of man love in the room-I remember that.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Just watched it again, and still got the tingles, I remember being as tense as I can ever remember as a spectactor during the shootout,

The euphoria of the Aloisi penality is very, very hard to beat

                    I love Brescianos staue celebration.

I remember Recoba missing a sitter early. A chance he would normally take with his eyes closed. I had my heart in my mouth everytime he was on the ball in that game. Kewell and Cahill both missed bread and butter chances as well.

Only time up to that point I can remember an entire stadium bellowing the national anthem at the top of their lungs.
