    England- The real deal?

In less then two days time England will become the new number one test side in the world going up 3-0 to India at home. They havent just won the series they have dominated from the very outset, their bowlers have overrun the supposedly great Indian batting, Dravid the only one who has been capable of playing the swinging ball. Broad has been huge, Anderson has taken wickets, Tremletts replacement Bresnan has both made wickets and taken runs while the batting lead by Cook and Pietersen have been dominant. England made a huge 701/7 last night, lead by Cooks 294 who is the youngest ever man to have chalked up 18 test tons, Sachin aside.

We can talk about the Indian preparation or how they travel but they have been massacred on this trip, just leads me to wonder whether England is the real deal? The other contender is South Africa, who have the big two Steyn and Morkel who slightly outweigh the England spear heads Anderson and Broad for mine but Englands depth in bowling overshadows them Swann, Tremlett, Bresnan and Finn run far deeper then the South African attack. The batting line ups remain quite evenly matched, Smith and Strauss match up, as do Amla and Trott and De Villiers and Pietersen, the big one and key to England dominance is Cook, if he maintains his form as really world class at the age of 26 he could really build a dominant era.

Before this series started Cook had amassed 6 half centuries in a row.
As far as tests are concerned I would put England number one.
Interesting interview with Broad the other day saying they were looking and building to be number one in all styles of the game ,they seem hungry and very proffessional at the minute.

On test form they havent been to India since 2006 and drew 1-1 without Vaughan or Trescothick. Toured Bangladesh before the Ashes and went undefeated, that was the series they rested a few, Strauss and Anderson come to mind so it was a good result. They havent been to Sri Lanka since 07/08 where they lost 1-nil. Id be taking all those results with a grain of salt, looks like a different England side.

tbh no-one cares about Test Cricket anymore except us and the English, which is a crying shame. They are very good though.

Wrapped it up by an innings and 250 odd runs, now officially number 1.

They're a very good team with great balance across their bowling and batting line ups.

The bowlers have really come on in the past couple of years - and a tour to the UK now is surely one of the hardest in world cricket. The English bowlers seam and swing so well and play the conditions perfectly. Very hard to score massive totals against.

Definitely deservedly No. 1 in the world, and we will get our pants pulled down big time the next time we tour the UK.

I know. I'm scared. (What, you don't think Steve Smith will be our all-conquering saviour?)

Hey Hilditch, maybe you can learn a thing or two about how to pick and grow a no.1 Test side from the Poms eh. It's certainly not by giving CA contracts to players based on their media profiles and handing test spots out based on 20/20 form.

I agree with the general sentiment but Eoin Morgan was largely picked on potential seen in the shorter forms of the game, has a first class average of 38. We need to strike a balance between picking and identifying guys early who have shown glimpses of potential with making them mature and earn a spot.

Morgan had played 60 ODI's before playing a test match though. Then in the past season of County he averaged 55 and hit 2 centuries and 3 50's in 11 innings. It was a very slow approach with him which may pay off.

That ODI figure is a bit contentious when you consider that the majority were for his native Ireland with a high number of those games against other associate nations, he wasnt exactly battling for a spot. Can draw an interesting comparison with Ferguson in regards to having similar figures, yet Ferguson is criticisied for not having 'done enough'.
