NBA 07-08 Eastern Conference - Southeast Division

The race in the East has gotten stronger with Boston re-tooling and Atlanta and Orlando looking on the up, Washington still having a fearsome trio and Charlotte swinging some draft day trades, and if Dwayne Wade ever gets health the Heat are somewhat of a threat.

    Southeast:

Atlanta - could this be the year the finally get close to re-emerging? They've had 7 years of high lottery picks and whilst I hated their PG selection of Acie Law, particularly when they could have tabbed Chris Paul or Deron Williams instead of Marvin Williams two years earlier. Anyhow their other rookie #3 pick and former Florida Gator Al Horford looks set to be a stud. If Josh Smith can produce consistently like he did down the stretch last year and Marvin Williams can provide support off the bench then this could be the year.

Orlando - have had a great off season even if overpaying for free agent forward Rashard Lewis - basically if you want somebody elses guy you have to overpay to get them. After the successful then bungled recruitment of back to back NCAA championship coach Billy Donovan the Magic made what may turn out to be a far better hire in Stan Van Gundy. Stan proved to be a great coach whilst coaching the in state Miami Heat in DWades rookie season. He arrives hear with 3rd year beast Dwight Howard a contender to lead the league in rebounds, field goal and points in the paint. Lewis adds a 3pt sniper that will spread the floor and allow Howard more room to operate. You figure that Lewis and Turkoglu could spend time at the PF spot in a mobile running team. Jameer Nelson is haggling over a contract extension and could be ready to blossom under the new coach. On the bench they have good pieces in Ariza, Arroyo, Dooling, Redick and Foyle. I expect Orlando to make the playoffs under a coach that seems to get career years out of players.

Washington - largely stood pat over the summer. They still have three of the most explosive scorers in the league in Arenas, Butler and Jamison. At centre Brendan Heywood will get more chance with Etan Thomas injured for the season, and this also opens it up for Songaila and Blatche. Stevenson and Daniels are solid veteran guards, and they add rookie guard Nick Young and forward Pecherov but it remains to be seen whether they will be any real help this year. If Arenas can recover from the knee injury completely then they will again be tough but they dont appear to have added the pieces to take them to the next level. Arenas has arrived at the upper echelon of NBA players (Kobe, Nash, Duncan, Wade, Lebron etc) and as Arenas goes so do the Wizards. I think they'll make the playoffs but could see them exiting first round, at best second round exit.

Charlotte - After trading for Jason Richardson on draft day, re-signing Gerald Wallace, Matt Carroll to long term deals, and allowing Brevin Knight to walk so that Ray Felton could run the team at PG it appeared things were heading in the right direction for the Bobcats. Then injury struck, first to the fat man Sean May, and then to second year forward Adam Morrison. As well as adding Richardson the Bobcats welcome a whole new coaching staff under rookie coach Sam Vincent (yes one of MJs buddies). Big men Emeka Okafor and Argentinian Walter Herrman figure to log heavy minutes. Right now Carroll appears to be the only sub whose game I like. Their bench just looks too weak - Brezec, McInnis, Derek Anderson its not a group that will put much fear into the hearts of opposing players and coaches.

Miami - So many question marks over the Heat right now. Dwayne Wade banged up and has not appeared in any pre season games. Jason Williams trying to rebound from knee problems, the recent trade for the talented head case Ricky Davis. after a winless pre-season. Will Riley finally trust Dorrell Wright enough to actually let him play through his mistakes at SF? Is Smush Parker good enough to make a difference at PG? How much does the Diesel - Shaq have left in the tank? Is Penny Hardaway still alive? When will Wade be back on the court? Basically I dont like the mix of players - and its hard to see where this group is heading long term. It looks built for one year only, and if it all goes wrong early the coach may blow it up. The trade for Davis helps but it really comes back to Wade who is an absolute superstar capable of putting a team on his back. The physical nature of the way Wade throws his body around appears to be taking its toll and hopefully this is not the beginning of the end for him. He is the kind of player that even people who dont really know much about the game can appreciate how incredible he is. Hopefully he can get long term injury free and we can watch one of the leagues brightest stars destroy defences once again.

I find it hard to watch the NBA nowadays. There seems to be too many gangsters playing and the players move around from team to team too much. I prefer watching the European basketball.

Yes, I used to be much more into it back in the mid to late 90's, especially as I played Basketball during these years.

It's become more of an entertainment based game, rather than a sport in some aspects. Although they still do have the most talented and exciting players in the world to watch.

I read a great book earlier this year, or late last, which focused on the 'Fab Five' College team that featured Chris Webbar, Jalen Rose etc. Was very interesting.

I predict the game we love will eventually go the same way to a certain, Big Business, extent.

That was a very exciting period. Webber's famous time out call (with non left) really stopped their charge.

Yes, it just wasn't meant to be for those guys. I imagine Chris is still haunted by it, albeit, nowhere near as much as others who didn't obtain the success that he has.

              IMO not very good.

They've changed the coach adding Jim OBrien, are one of the few teams capable of playing an almost all white 5, but not much else has changed with respect to personnel except backup point guard Travis Deiner and backup SG Kareem Rush. Whilst those two could be handy, they are just backups and aren't hugely going to make a difference by themselves. They made a huge trade with the Warriors towards the end of last year that landed them Dunleavy, Troy Murphy and Ike Diogu.

A lot of the growth has to come from these three former Warriors getting comfortable in Indy and 3rd year forward Danny Granger whose perhaps the Griffen of the NBA - multiskilled forward who can do it all, but who stagnated in his second year. But perhaps it all comes down to the leadership of wayward talented guard Jamaal Tinsley whose best basketball is terrific, but whose seeming lack of interest in conditioning sees him miss too many games a season, and sleep walk through too many. The X factor is Shawne Williams a second year forward who seems to be able to do it all, but who missed the first 3 games of the season suspended for being caught driving without a license.

The new coach has a reputation for being a veterans coach and employs an offence that features lots of three point shooting. He had good success in both Boston and Philly before getting the axe - I guess he has a bit of a wrap of being able to get ordinary teams to perform pretty well but not ever really get them over the hump. And being in the middle in the NBA is even more difficult than in the AFL as their draft is a little easier to project - although teams still stuff it up.

The mix of players the Paces actually have is a strange mix, whilst having some talent, its just hard to see it really working unless they can find the on court leadership they seem to have been lacking whilst having some of the leagues biggest knuckleheads play there over the past 3-5 years.

So there are all these reasons why I dont really like what the Pacers are doing but they have gone and won their first 3 games with Mike Dunleavy jnr (the Sam Power of the NBA, except his Dad is the coach of the clippers and not a star with the Brisbane Lions) posting incredible numbers. And with Troy Murphy and Jermaine Oneal each missing games.

That said they've beaten two teams who are really struggling, Miami and Washington, plus the rebuilding Memphis.

I obviously love basketball, and I enjoy the NBA But I understand your senitments about the NBA - there have been, and are some real knuckleheads in the league, and the play degenerated into too much 1 on 1

I enjoy watching the NBL & Euroleague stuff when its on because for a player with my athleticism its a much easier game to relate to - Whatever the european players lack in athleticism they often make up for in skill, knowing how to play, poise, cunning and guile.

However, the NBA game has actually improved over the past 2-4 years where there is far more team based play, offensive movement and multiskilled players.

For GVGjr or any other casual/ non fans here are the teams I would recommend checking out and the reasons for it. I could obviously watch any team play but for the casual fan wanting to see a good team.

The West is really where its at, and any of this 4 and perhaps Utah should be a good team to watch:

Phoenix Suns - if you have time and a game is on its well worth checking out Steve Nash and the Phoenix suns who play an up tempo, running game with lots of fast breaks, dunks and three point shooting. Nash is a magician on the court at creating for his teammates, but they also have Shawn Marion, Amare Stoudamire, Grant Hill and the brazillian blur Leandro Barbosa.

San Antonio - some people describe them as boring because they perhaps feature less individual flashes of brilliance, but they actually play much better team basketball than anyone else and for the purists that collective brilliance is more appealing. Their big man Tim Duncan is the best in the business and they pass and cut like no other team. And they have one of the most hated players in the league in argentinian Manu Ginobli plus the Husband of the desperate housewife Tony Parker.

Dallas Mavericks - a deep and well drilled team under the Lil General Avery Johnson, they are led on court by Dirk Nowitzki - a seven foot mobile german who can flat out shoot the lights out. Jerry Stackhouse is tough and can score

Houston - featuring 7 foot 6 chinese centre Yao Ming whose an incredible player, and a 6 foot 7 Tracy McGrady they are expected to be one of the teams on the rise in 07-08.

                The East:

The East isn't as strong and the teams even though a lot of the teams have got stronger, and so I dont feel as confident recommending teams in the East as being great viewing. Detroit are a veteran team, but I dont know that they are that great to watch, Boston could be really good but again its a new team and its going to take time for them to get it together. I think Orlando could make some noise.

                Individuals:

There are loads of guys in the NBA who are super talented and most teams have a few of them, BUT IMO these are the individuals who are worth watching to see them do their thing, and who consistently perform at such a high level, and if they have a big game can take your breath away:

Kobe LA Lakers - he is a guy that people struggle to warm to, but he is a competitor and hits incredibly tough shots every night.
Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat when on song is perhaps the most amazing player in the game, the way he slices past people with incredible athleticism and then dunks.
                Lebron James - Cleveland Cavaliers - a
Allen Iverson whilst looking like a gangsta plays the game with the heart of a champion, fearlessly throwing himself around every game and never taking a night off.
Gilbert Arenas - Washington Wizards, a scoring PG who has a swagger, his own blog spot where hes admitted to voting for himself in all-star ballots and that he collects signed singlets of his opponents etc.
Carlos Boozer - a big brusing guy who likes being big, loves to bang and do all the dirty work, plus is an incredible offensive post player.
Dwight Howard - one of the up and coming stars of the league - cut from a similar cloth to Boozer

There are other guys for the more interested observer who are on the rise
                Pau Gasol Memphis
                Luol Deng Chicago
                Chris Paul New Orleans
                Deron Williams Utah
                Chris Bosch Toronto
                Kevin Durant Seattle

Magic won again today but are still struggling with no bench. Desperately need Reddick and Ariza to come back.

I quite like watching the Magic but they will struggle without the bench players. Howard is an exciting player to watch.

Howard is great to watch. He has so much fun out there and is the anti gangster!

Another good win today and Howard didnt really do anything. Hedo has come to life again after a very poor last season.

I think our bench will be OK once they come back from injury

Topdog - good call on the anti gangsta Howard

Coach Stan Van Gundy seems to be just intent on surrounding Howard with 4 shooters; , Lewis, Nelson and *****s - and hes even finding a few minutes for Pat Garrity at times whose only asset is shooting

Hedo Turkoglu has been incredible in the early part of the season

Ariza hasnt had much court time, which is slightly surprising given his form at the finish of last season - but he still has time to work his way out of the doghouse.

I think there is enough on the bench in Ariza, Dooling, Arroyo and Reddick - they have Foyle if they want to go with a bigger lineup, and Reddick will get better as recovers from an injured hand

Has led the Magic to a top of the division start (2nd in the Eastern conference behind Boston)

                              Magic 12 wins - 3 losses
