Great win by Sam, first woman tennis player to win a grand slam in over 30 years and only the second Australian womens name on the US trophy. (Margaret Court 5 times winner)

    Pretty damn amazing performance too.

Many times in the past Sam has been accused of being a little bit too laid back, but that probably helped her in the cauldron today.

ps. I've actually hit with her and Alicia a couple of times back when I was more involved in tennis circles, must be nearly seven or eight years ago now, can't believe she's a Grand Slam winner!

          Brilliant win by Sam.

I was asked the question today whether Sam gets the plaudits she deserves in this country. At the time I thought yes but on reflection, I'm not 100% sure.

Not at all. Until she won yesterday people were still questioning if she was any good. This is a girl who's beaten every single player in the top 10 the past two years, and has made Grand Slam semifinals and finals without quite breaking through. No doubt she's an absolute gun superstar.

Should be at least equal with Pat Rafter in the legend stakes in my book.

ps. Pity about Alicia's injuries -- she was ahead of Sam in many ways a few years back, and would have broken through too, having made a couple of Slam semis herself. It was bittersweet watching her interview Sam after her win.

To me Sam always struggled mentally. In all honestly I was more surprised she won her semi final than the final.

She actually has acknowledged that she did have mental demons mainly they were self doubt. Now she is over them, hopefully she can have another 4-5 years at the top. Physically she is near perfection and now hopefully mentally.

                .
Who do you rate higher in the legend stakes - Rafter or Hewitt?

That's much closer than it first looks.

Look no doubt Hewitt has probably achieved more overall, but I hold Rafter in the highest esteem as a human being as well, so that counts in his favour. Their Grand Slam records aren't actually all that far apart also.

Having said that, though, for all his faults as a human being, Lleyton was the best player in the world for a long time during the interregnum between Sampras and Fed, and was pretty close to all-time legend status until the Fed show rolled into town for good.

I'll sit on the fence on this one and just say that they were both pretty amazing players for Australia over a long time, and it's pretty cool seeing Pat captain Lleyton in the Davis Cup.

Rafter had all the talent in the world but he didn't have the killer instinct required. Injuries also didn't help him.

Hewitt gave his all time and time again, regardless what you think of him as a person he was a great warrior on the tennis court. Now unfortunately injuries have caught up with Hewitt and hopefully he retires at the 2012 Australian open.
