    The A League

Now that the AFL season is well & truly into mothballs, it’s time to look further afield for other sporting interests & pursuits. A recently new innovation is the A League.

For years Australian soccer spiraled out of control. A major contributor to this in my view was that teams were set up along racial lines. In Melbourne for example we had South Melbourne (Greece), Preston (Macedonia), Sunshine Knights (Croatia), Footscray JUST (Serbia), George Cross (Scotland), Green Gully (Malta) & Brunswick (Italy).

Unfortunately many of these matches were marred by crowd violence. I can testify to this first hand. I didn’t know there was a difference between Croats & Serbs when I was in High School. I thought they were all Yugoslavs & went to watch a match in Footscray between these sides. The match was suspended as the crowd rioted. I vowed that I’d never attend another soccer match in Australia whilst we had that sort of set up.

I have no idea how things were in other states.

The A League was set up 3 seasons ago & 8 teams were included. One from Victoria (Melbourne Victory), 3 from NSW (Sydney FC, Newcastle Jjets & Central Coast Mariners) 1 from Queensland (Queensland Roar), 1 from SA (Adelaide United), 1 from WA (Perth Glory) & the 8th team from NZ (New Zealand Knights, but now Wellington Phoenix).

This has been a fantastic initiative from Soccer Australia & there have been massive crowds in attendance, particularly in Melbourne.

In the inaugural season Sydney FC won the title, whilst last season Melbourne Victory claimed the throne.

So, who follows the fortunes of the A League & to what degree? Do you attend regularly or just sit back & watch the games on Foxtel?

I didn’t attend any games in the first season, but my kids got interested last season & we went to half a dozen games, including the Grand Final.

Tickets are cheap, around $17 for games at Hindmarsh. I'm hoping to get out and see a few games this season, just for something to do.

Adelaide seem to be going reasonably well (until last nights loss to Qld), so it's probably a good time to jump on the bandwagon a bit!
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Jumped on the bandwagon this season after watching closely from the lounge the last few seasons. The atmosphere is fantastic at Telstra dome even with only 25k in there, at some AFL matches it can feel dead with 25k in the ground.

The A-league concept was the only way football in Australia was going to work, and now we are starting to attract some reasonable quality to the league it's profile will only continue to grow.

Am really looking forward to the Asian Champions League next year.

I'd always been a TV watcher of soccer and I think went to one NSL game at Albert Park.
Since the start of the A-League I've been to games when I can, which unfortunately hasn't been that often, maybe 3 or 4 games a season.
As with the Premier League it's basically impossible to follow not having Foxtel which I find makes it hard to keep a real support and connection with the team. I understand they needed the Foxtel money but it doesn't make it easy to follow.
On the upside I enjoy the competition and have learnt quite a lot about tactics by seeing the full field which you don't get on TV. It's a game I've watched for a long time but am not overly tactically across, certainly not to any real depth. Here's hoping it continues to grow in both popularity and quality.
Having said all that, I'm listening to the game on SEN from Gosford now, so it's not all bad from a coverage front.

Love the A-League. Big Liverpool supporter in England so keep up to date on Harry over there, and a Victory supporter over here. Great initiative from FFA and the league is continually growing in quality.

One thing that is clear is the total difference in atmosphere an earlier poster eluded to. Theres no crowd quite like a soccer crowd. However, i am student and dont have a lot of cash to splash around. Last season i was a victory member, so this season its the Dogs turn
