    Mitch Johnson...

    When fit we have:

    Siddle
    Hilfy
    Harris
    Cummins
    Pattinson
    Starc
    (Lyon)

    and others.

So the question is, is Mitch a certainty for the next 11 he is fit for, or have 3/4 of the above blocked him out and he has to go back to the shield?

    Re: Mitch Johnson...

I think his days are numbered as he is just too erratic. He needs to display some impeccable control with his bowling at the shield level before I would let him play in another test match.

Harris is just a match by match consideration given his injury concerns.
Lets hope Akram can work some magic with Starc

I think he has the potential to improve unlike Johnson but he is a way off at the moment.

Going a bit early aren't we? Think he'll make it but it will take time.

Another promising player who also has a foot related injury is Hazlewood. He has taken 17 wickets for 30 this season and just turned 21. Unfortunately he is out for 8 weeks.

I think Mitch Johnson is under pressure to bowl consistently and accurately. Once Cummins Pattinson and Hazelwood recover from injury and with Stark, we have some very good potential bowlers (all young) for the future.

How bad is Tait, watched him last night he has no control whatsoever, how the hell did he ever get so far?

I can't see any way he could be an automatic selection when fit. We can't afford to go into Test matches one bowler short, which is effectively what we've done in matches he's struggled to land it on the pitch.

                  Re: Mitch Johnson...

What you see is what you get with Tait. On a good day he'll take 4 wickets no worries, on a poor day he'll go for truckloads, drop catches and try to bat from square leg. All he is a 20/20 'gun' for hire, which is all he wants to be.

The problem Johnson faces I think is that even if he does get back to form/fitness, is that he has to change the way he bowls. What I mean is that he looks to take a wicket every ball, and cannot build pressure. He gives the batsman a four delivery every over at least. This affects the bloke bowling at the orther end as he has to try and tighten up the runflow. Johnson is not good at bowling in partnerships. The blokes we have bowling at the moment are, and I also include Harris, Bollinger, Cummins to a degree in a group that are ahead of him in this department. Copeland is also, but just not quick enough. 140kmph + good consistent full length + swing = Test Bowler in todays cricket.

                    He can bowl quick occasionally.

Mitch Johnson has a very similar history to Tait. Showed plenty of promise but unfortunately consistency and accuracy, plus mental confidence issues, put them very much out of the test selection picture.

And yet, was picked for three straight years despite being largely shithouse, and was only dropped because of injury. That's our selection process in a nutshell.

The worst thing about his injury-forced omission is the revelation that, of course, there was a heck of a lot of talent locked out of the Test scene because of the continuing selection of a non-performer. There was never any need for us to fall to no.5 in the Test ranking.. with Johnson's hilarious bowling, the likes of Ponting and Haddin averaging 25 for two years, etc. etc., we have been essentially playing around 2 to 3 players short for two years.

I marked Johnson's papers once Cummins played in that first test. Then when Patto came in it was put beyond all doubt.
