I didn't think the selectors had it in them to move Ricky on but it appears that they have made the hard decision. I think there is an announcement tomorrow about his cricket future.

Re: Ponting Dropped?
About time they had some guts to do this. Now we need to replace Lee, and Hussey and start thinking about the long term, ie next World Cup.
One thing which the selectors really got right was Wade, he has been sensational both behind the stumps and batting. I think his keeping has gone up a notch.FFC: Established 1883

Re: Ponting Dropped?
As for Punter, I wish he came to this situation by himself rather than being dropped. Should have left ODI cricket to concentrate on test matches a year ago.
Hopefully people will remember the 2003 world cup final Ponting, rather than the 2012 ODI series Ponting?Comment

Re: Ponting Dropped?
It's a strange one.. I've been calling for his head for a while now, but having seen his Test performances this summer, I actually think he SHOULDN'T retire from all forms. ODIs are Mickey Mouse for a player of his stature anyway.
If the Test team was in better shape I would say, yes, go, but as it stands, he's definitely still one of our best 6 batsmen at Test level (and was a massive contributor to our series win), and now that Clarke is captain and we have all been spared Ricky's ordinary captaincy, I think he still has a lot to offer in the next two transitional years as a no.5.
The only batsman that should be coming into the Test side in the next 12 months is Khawaja (and Wade over Haddin of course), and my fear is that if Ponting goes, it just gives the selectors an excuse to give Shaun Marsh (or Phil Hughes!) a reprieve, which would just be a ridiculous situation. Put Punter or Mr.Cricket out to pasture only when Watson is ready to play again.
EDIT: I just saw his announcement.. think he made the right decision!Comment

Re: Ponting Dropped?
His reaction and comments are to be applauded, a great example to anyone in any sport struggling to earn promotion or dealing with their own demotion. He took full responsibility and refused to blame others for something he had control over. Well played and credit to him, went up a notch in my book.Comment

Re: Ponting Dropped?
Funny retort to resident NSW mafia and serial whinger Geoff Lawson.
George Bailey responding to Serial whingers claim that Pontings "self indulgent"
" it's a pity when Ambrose broke his jaw, they didn't wire up his mouth permantely"
Whaaaaaaack!Comment

Re: Ponting Dropped?
He always struck me as someone who would give anything to win? Sometimes that is or comes across as arrogant I guess?
Take the other night in the final against SA. A guy with his kind of international career you'd think would not give a toss about a state final? But at the final ball when Tassie needed two runs to win, he removed his pads in a last ditch effort to give himself the best chance to win the game. Now that sums him up I think, and how the fans receive that sums up our opinion of him.
Arrogant to show off and remove the pads in a "look at me" scenario. Or a guy that doesn't care what people think of him if it means his team will win???
Each to their own.Comment

Re: Ponting Dropped?
Ponting is a fierce competitor.
Arrogant, probably ( like most greats)
Self indulgent, I don't get that perception.
Great players usually get more leverage when it comes selection.Comment

Re: Ponting Dropped?
I've never thought of Ponting as self-indulgent.
Blinkered, stubborn as a mule, conservative, overly defensive (in personality), a bit lacking in self-awareness, but I've never gotten the feeling that he's ever thought it was all about him. He is very, very driven, and never admits defeat or flaws (in public), which probably has the same effect as self indulgence.Comment

Re: Ponting Dropped?
Ponting is the captain of a team who lost the ashes because he was too stubborn to put in a 3rd man, even the commentators were puzzled.
This was also followed by going to India with 4 fast bowlers and commenting we dont need a spinner we will blast them out, think they lost the series 4-0. Going to India with no spinners? Arrogance or what?
The success he had as a captain was due to the champions he had in his side able to win anything but even he managed to lose an ashes series with them.
Dont get me wrong he was a great batsman but his captaincy and keeping his mates in the squad were his and Australias achillies heel.Bring back the biffComment

Re: Ponting Dropped?
So a win was due to great players but a loss was bad captaincy?
Are you a politician Ledge? Granted I haven't seen every game Ponting was captain in, but surely they weren't that clear cut?
Surely some blame and praise could be shared around?Comment
